How long as he been in a drug induced coma? With my dad The good thing about a trache is that once fitted (after 4 weeks in a coma and on a ventilator) sedation was reduced and they could wake him up. Seems a bit strange doctors won't explain why they are doing it though. Definitely ask nurses and if need be the family should ask for a meeting with an ICU doctor or consultant if there are things happening that they don't understand. X
HI Tonyamiller,
I was in ICU on a resperator with double pneumonia was in a sleep coma for 9 days. I can tell you what I was told. When they wanted to remove the resperator they asked if I would let them put a traqia tube if I wouldn't be able to breather on my own. They can only keep you on resperator for so long the hospital I was at and great doctors said 8 days was the max and I would on for 9 days. Thank god I didn't have to be traqia . I still have not got my voice back and it's been 6 months. I would let them put the traqia in because they can remove that and it gives your dad a chance of life again. I can also tell you when he wakes up he will be so weak he won't be able to walk or anything by his self. I had to stay in the hospital 2 weeks longer just to be able to learn to do everything again. I will pray for your family tonight and put your foot down with the doctors and make them give you answers !! The reason I say that is because I was at one hospital that just let me lay there on 10 liters of oxgyen until my daughter got the right doctor for me and had me moved to a better hospital which saved my life.
