My dad has been in ICU for 3 weeks.. sedated for over 2 weeks. He was taken off sedation 4 days ago but is not waking. He is breathing on his own a lot of the time but also has help from the ventilator.
I would like to hear stories of how long it took people to start responding after sedation. I am so worried that my dad my never wake up

My dear friend, I am glad your dad is no longer in sedation and is now breathing on his own and with help from ventilator. I was in sedation for several weeks, though I don't know how long before I woke up to see my family, I eventually woke up to the delights of my family. Your dad will wake up after he's had some time to get back to his comfort zone. Being in sedation is very traumatic and in sedation, I remember I was in a great deal stress, and was constantly fearful of some one chasing after me. As soon as your dad is ready, he will wake up to see your smiling face very soon. Take care, and do not be afraid. All the best from Canada.
The docs took 9 days to fully wake me up, it varies according to the patient. I'm so glad he can occasionally breathe on his own. The docs took me off my sedation and put me back on several times as they completed test wakes, he will awake when he's ready but please prepare yourself for him to be extremely agitated and not his normal self. I was very rude to my husband and was swearing my head off when I first awoke properly, this was because I'd had horrible nightmares in my coma and thought I was still in it. The next day I said here comes my beautiful husband but I still don't remember saying it. It took me at least a week to realise I'd been in a coma and I still can't comprehend how close I came to dying. You being there for your dad will be so important when he is awake and out of his nightmares xxxx
