Traveling with INR monitor

Traveling to Europe for the first time with an INR monitor and would like to know if anyone has experienced any problems taking it through security or has any tips.

I have done this many many times . My INR goes up and down so I have to adjust the warfarin I am on. Take lots of the test sticks. Lots!! Maybe one pack of 15 or so a month. You can use them on your return but saves trying to hunt them down. For me in Australia travelling to Europe the hardest thing was the time zones and accomodating it for medication. I had them is my handbag (monitor and sticks) and also luggage (sticks)

I always take mine on holiday with me and keep it in my hand luggage. I have a letter in the pocket of the case from my healthcare provider stating that I am on warfarin and the machine is to test my blood but I have never had to use it.

Have travelled plenty in Europe with a Coaguchek machine, have never had any security problems.

DO: keep it (and your meds) in hand luggage, so you are not separated from it.

DO: carry your meds in original packaging, with prescription documentation.

I personally also keep a spare set of meds separately (in checked luggage), and a spare set of documentation.

I do exactly the same, with the exception of meds. All meds with me and I do not separate myself from it. A note from doctor says “ must be kept with patient at all times as she must monitor and have access to meds as needed in flight.”

I have traveled to Europe with it with no problem. Be sure to bring it with your carry on, as test strips could be temp sensitive ( can’t remember anymore…. )

If anyone asks explain that it’s similar to a blood glucose monitor like diabetics use, but to tell you the thickness of your blood.

I have travelled to many countries with my monitor and in only one was there any question about it. They asked me to turn it on, like you might a cell phone. And that was it. Happy travels.
