Moving to warmer climates

Hello, we live in the Northeast and thinking about moving to Florida. I'm wondering about any changes in the disease, shifts in coping, etc that might be very different living in a much warmer climate. Has anyone done this? any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations and/or insights you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, there!

I was just wondering if you have been diagnosed with APS, as this is a dedicated APS forum? ( otherwise any suggestions, insights, or experience we share here would be disease specifics, and would be of no benefit to you personally.)

However, I will say being on the divide in Texas, we enjoy beautiful weather most of the year. Blue clear skies are preferable to snow storms , if you are lucky enough to have a career/ profession that can be equally supported in Florida.

Hi Kelly; yes, my understanding of the purpose for this forum was exactly what you mention here. My husband is diagnosed with Lupus Anticoagulant Syndrome and my step daughter APS. We are concerned about what different climates might be like in regards to dealing with these conditions, if others have had challenges or if there is any research out there in this regard...I thought others here might be willing to share. If not...I understand.

Perfect! We are happy to help. I just wasn’t sure as many people accidentally stumble upon the forum thinking it’s about warfarin or afib, etc.

It’s often challenging to get a good, comprehensive medical team in place that know your husband and step daughter well.

It can be very challenging to replicate that elsewhere. Im sure you all have considered all of this very thoughtfully. I’m sure the current team members could help with that.

The warm weather would certainly be attractive!

Only you can make that decision obviously.

I would say if Raynauds is a very challenging problem, ( gangrene is a serious concern and has been stated as such by the doctors) , or if you feel the over all quality of your lives would be improved despite the many upheavals, then it’s worth considering.

Only you can know all the factors involved.

Best of luck

I have APS and have been living and working in Florida since 1989. Welcome to the sunshine state!

It is hard for me to say if climate changes anything as I have been here quite awhile. That being said....travel sometimes does affect me. Travel does put me off of my usual schedule of sleep, rest, food and can take me a few days to feel my "normal" self.

I always feel better and need less anticoagulation in the Summer months than winter. Only struggle more in high humidity.

Long term, for me, I would jump at going somewhere long term warmer but I would want reassurance that I have a good APS specialist team in the area I am moving to.

Good that you are researching all before you decide - good luck with your move

When the weather is "L" = low pressure, I get headache and some parts of my body hurt more. Especially when a thunderstorm is very close and also feel much better when it goes away.

I think that perhaps "normally" people have those symptoms also.

Hi! I just moved from Hawaii to Florida. And I spend winters there and summers in Illinois. I drive back and forth. So far, the Florida climate has been very good for me (Lupus and APS).

Especially the warm swimming pools which I absolutely love. And I found great rheumatologist.

Me? I'm part polar bear. I always feel better in cool climates. But we're all individuals.

Good morning

I have lived in Florida quite a while now but travel extensively, with many months each year spent in Australia. I have to say I am most comfortable in Florida, the warmer climates. I find the north east the worst with their pressure changes. Here in fla, with the ability to get out and move and exercise every day if you wish, which is important, an extremely important feature.

Good luck!

Hello, I lived in Florida in the Orlando area , loved it! I actually felt better in Florida that I do now in the Northern Great Plains. My primary APS did better down there. All that sunshine did wonders for my vitamin D levels. The humidity is actually better there than where I'm at right now. The ocean breeze does wonders with the humidity. You'll probably spend more time outside now than you did up north. Great beaches on the Atlantic side. Lido beach on the gulf side next to Longboat key , Sarasota is wonderful to! You'll love it there.
