APS and cervical cancer

Hi All, haven't posted for ages but now have a question. I have had a 'borderline changes' smear result and have read that people with an autoimmune disease is more at risk of developing cancer due to the fact that constant attacks on our tissues by our own bodies causes continuous re-growth of cells which in turn can increase the risk of DNA mistakes (mutations) occurring which can lead to tumours. Has anyone got any information or had dealings with this?

I can understand your anxiety but I wouldn't get too hung up on this information.

What you should do, IMHO, is to speak with your GP, gynaecologist, as to what this means. They may recommend you have a repeat smear and other investigations & tests, if required. Not everything is due to autoimmunity.

With good wishes,

Ros

I think I would sit tight, and await for further investigations, I went through this process and actually I was fine, it was a false result for me, obviously I do not know in detail your circumstances, however I do advise if you have another follow up appointments for testing again, that you take somebody with you who can be supportive. Hopefully your appointment is coming up soon, if not please do ring your GP and get an urgent appointment, do say how worried you are. MaryF

Hi, I had abnormal smear results 6 weeks post still birth. I went into complete breakdown overdrive mode!!

I put myself through so much stress - this was all way before I knew anything of APS/Hughes.

I was treated very quickly and no long term problems so all the stress unnecessary - easier said than done!

I'm sure you now will have follow ups, if not contact your GP, sometimes these results are cautionary and they may repeat the smear or decide to follow up with further investigations.

Hi

I have had this same result in the past twice both times fine and clear. I believe the test can show as abnormal even if you have a little infection down below. Do follow everything up but don't worry yourself.

Add me to the list of members here who have had initial 'we need a follow -up on this' results. My follow up was fine, and currently I am asked to make sure I do not miss my annual check ups so my OB/GYN can continue to keep his eye on this.
