INR 4.9!

Hello, I haven't posted in a long time. I am on Warfarin and I have never been able to get in range. Usually too low. Now I have another ailment with my lungs and am on Bactrim and other meds. My number is for the first time HIGH at 4.9. Is this dangerous?. My doctor told me to hold Warfarin for today and then lower by 1/2 milligram tomorrow. Is there anything I can do to make sure I am safe. Should I have a Kale salad tonight? Any advice appreciated. Worried

Hello

Although 4.9 is high, it’s not excessive so try not to worry so much. I currently have a vein INR of 5.8 that I’m working to correct.

I certainly wouldn’t try eating a huge bowl of Kale as well as following your Drs advice as this would likely drop you too low and too quick.

Follow Drs advice (assuming you trust them and they usually manage you well!). Test often and I’m sure you’ll be back in range soon.

I agree with Yllek!

Do not do two things at the same time (drop Warfarin and more greens) as that would lower your INR the other way.

HI, you have had some good replies here, please keep checking regularly, it does sound as if you doctor knows what they are doing, hopefully you will stabilise back to your target really soon. MaryF

Thanks everyone. I realized that having Kale would raise my number not lower it. I did eat some veggies and skipped a day hopefully that will help. Thanks for the support.

You were right the first time. Kale would lower your INR due to the vitamin content. But if you decrease your dose as well as eat additional vitamin K then it would drop too much putting you at risk of a clot.

Take care

Curious... how are/ did you feel at the 4.9? How is your number now?

Hey there! Just seeing this. I didn't feel anything major at 4.9 a bit of a headache and light headed but nothing bad. I was just SCARED to have the number. I have to be watched closely as I am on Prednisone and Bactrim both that cause INR to rise. I have been on Warfarin for over a year and have hardly been in range which is frustrating. Back to normal now. I hope you are ok I miss chatting with you :)
