Is breastfeeding safe with APS?

Hi all,

Not sure if it's a silly question but it is safe to breastfeed if you have APS?

Since one of the main benefits of breastfeeding is passing on mothers antibodies, and we have 'corrupt' antibodies; are we passing on or increasing the possibility of our child having APS?

Hughes Syndrome and Lupus can't be passed to your baby via breastfeeding. However always check with your consultant re any medications you may be on. MaryF

Hi hope all is going well!! Yes I wasn't told I couldn't breastfeed with lupus and aps but I tried and stopped as I'm on fluoxetine and I felt it was making my baby agitated so I had to stop (midwife said I could but I felt too upset that I thought it was making baby agitated).

So as far as I am aware it's ok X

Ps How long have u got left now? X

I was reassured by my high risk ob that it was safe. You just have to keep an eye on the meds you take. I believe lovenox, heparin, warfarin, and baby aspirin are the only safe ones. And it can only be a baby aspirin as aspirin is transferred into breastmilk and can cause Reye's syndrome at higher levels. My baby is 3 months and doing great breastfeeding :)

It's safe, just have to watch what mess you take. I accidentally took fenugreek for supply issues and then realized it cannot be taken with blood thinners. I did have to have a MRI to check clots/ legions in my brain and had to stop breastfeeding for 24 hours because of the dye used.

Hi Oliversmum, there are no silly questions as far as I'm concerned :-) Just to add a bit more reassuring words - I breastfed my son for two and a half years (he stopped when he wanted to). I wasn't on any meds though, so that is really the thing to check in your case if you are on any. Happy breastfeeding!

Thanks for your responses ladies.

Sara,

I'm currently 34 weeks 4 days! Obs said I can start trying to induce at 38 weeks! Which I'm looking forward to, quite uncomfortable already - if it's not a nerve in my back/leg it's rib pain.

Any suggestions for inducing? So far on my list I've got:

Pineapple (it worked for my son)

Acupuncture

Obs said I can have a sweep at 38 + 2 and again at 39 +2 if needed

I've got a yoga ball so I'll be bouncing on that

Can you tell I want her out?
