Research by the Medical Research Council, sponsored by the Wellcome Trust and the BHF show that vessels are formed as a result of demand in very early life. They have identified a gene that is crucial to this, and a protein in cells that makes them respond in this way.
It is hoped this could inform some cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
I wonder if this could help us deal better with this clots and microclots that blight our lives.
I would hope so. But my understanding is that reserach into new blood vessel development follows the cancer exploration track as we seek to understand how a growing tumor is able to acquire new, custom built blood vessels. If we could figure
out how that is done and shut thst process down , then in the case if growing tumors, we could starve those parasitic devils and deprive them of the oxygen supply they need to survive and grow!
I agree Gina - it looks like the main beneficiaries will be cancer and cardiovascular research, but let's hope there will be a knock-on effect. The British Heart Foundation are very pleased with this research: bhf.org.uk/media/news-from-...
