Hi, is there any mums out there with autism??

Hi, i'm Terri, I have a Mild form of Autism. I'm a full time mum to 3 children, 2 girls and 1 boy. I was 3 years old when I was diagnosed. I still feel alone sometimes and i'm still not very good at a social interaction but im, better. I'm the women I am because of my mum, if it wasn't for her I probably wouldn't be married or have children. I'm lucky to have a mum who was willing to push to be sure I have this life I have. When diagnosed at the George Elliot they stated to my mum that my Autism was more towards the higher level and I may need specialist care later on, at the time of diagnosis. Mum fought to keep me in mainstream School, my one to one special needs helped and mum pushing me has allowed me to live the life I have. Are there any other Autistic mums out there??

  • Hi Terri,

It is nice to meet you. I have Aspergers, I am 39 and have 5 children, I was diagnosed around 18 months ago. 3 of my children are diagnosed too.

  • Hi, I am another mum with Aspergers. I have 2 daughters, my eldest is diagnosed with ASD also. I too can struggle with social interaction as I dislike 'crowded' places, I start to feel like I'm drowning or being swallowed by the number of people but I try to persevere for the sake of family & friends (I will visit the park with my girls but get uncomfortable with the number of people about when it's busy or I will go to pubs/restaurants with friends/family & can again feel uncomfortable at busier times). Most of my confidence is a 'mask' I have acquired from 'Amateur dramatics' during my youth (I loved pretending to be somebody else for a brief period) & 'Assertive' classes (partly through my having been a union rep for work). Many people don't know I have Aspergers unless I choose to tell them & are surprised when I do tell them.
