Replacement for Digoxin

Hi, I have had atrial fibrillation now for 6 years. I take bisoprorol 7.5 as well as full dose of digoxin for last 6 years. New GP, who I see on Friday says there is not enough digoxin in the blood to be therapeutic sent by text message( not seen her yet) Digoxin, everywhere I look online, doctors say it is not the best for rate control any more and there is much better meds out there. I would like to ask, has anyone come off digoxin and moved onto a more effective alternative drug? I am in permanent state AF and live in the UK. In my part of Kent you never see a cardiologist, just a specialist nurse, and only when referred to the cardiac clinic. I would like to go to my appointment on Friday with the GP and come up with some possible alternatives for digoxin. I understand they are the experts, but I would like to research drugs firstly. I never get any symptoms of my condition, however, just want to be on a more effective drug as I know they are out there for rate control. I do not take any other medications or have any other condition. Any suggestions welcome. Many thanks.

Hello Julie, have you been offered an ablation for your afib? That would be a more permanent solution for your afib if you’re not getting along with the medications?

No, that has never been mentioned ever. It's not that I'm not getting on with the meds, more a case of finding one that works

Good morning Julie,

You may find it useful to take a look at our booklets 'AF Drug Information': api.heartrhythmalliance.org... and 'Treatment Options for AF': api.heartrhythmalliance.org...

There may be some alternatives or more options in these to help at your appointment.

Please feel free to contact our Patient Services Team if you would like any further advice or support: 01789 867501 email: info@heartrhythmalliance.org
