My heartbeat

Hello! I am new here. I found this page and figured it would be the prefect place to ask some questions and get some advice. I have been having this problem where it feels like my heart is gonna beat out of my chest. It beats so hard for about 10 seconds and then it’s fine. It does it 1-2 times a day usually. And it happens even when I’m just sitting down doing nothing. Many times I can feel it in my throat. And many times it makes me feel like it just took my breath away and a cough a little. I occasionally get chest pain but it’s not unbearable. I don’t know if it is heartburn or indigestion because I don’t know how that feels exactly. Someone I work with described her problem almost identically to mine and she ended up having a hole in her heart. Since then I’ve been wondering about it. My friend keeps telling me to go to the doctor but I’m not a doctor person (I know that’s bad) maybe someone on here has my same problem? What should I do? (P.s. my blood pressure is typically normal and my heart rate varies from time to time)

This sounds like something to do with the electrical activity in the heart, which controls how your heart beats. It is very unlikely to be life threatening, but you will benefit from getting it under control. The variable heart rate shows that it is not just indigestion. The vagus nerve connects heart and digestive system (and brain!), hence the strange mixture of symptoms! So . . . a trip to the doctor would be a sensible way forward.
