Hi everyone,

I heard this on the news this morning and think that it's a shocking statistic as there are so many other health risks once someone has developed type 2 diabetes.

Here's the article:

I'd like to remind members that we have a pre diabetes Topic section and we have pre diabetes badges for members who want help in preventing diabetes and we try and help members to see how with a few simple steps some of them can reverse their diabetes.

We all have to be aware of how likely we are to develop diabetes and take whatever action we can so its not up to the Government or the NHS its up to us as a society as to how we are going to deal with this very real threat to so many peoples health.

So here's a link to see how likely you are to get develop 2 diabetes:

And know your risk of developing type 2 D:

I'm not surprised. 2/3 of us are overweight or obese and it's increasing. The CDC says that 1/2 of adult Americans have type II diabetes or pre-diabetes, and we follow them, just lagging a few years.

In fact, we take it less seriously. Last time I had a hba1c test (2 years ago), my result was 38mmol/mol (==5.6%). My doctor said "that's great!", because 43 mmol/mol is the cutoff for pre-diabetes in the UK. But in the USA, it's 5.7% (39), so if I had had the same result in a US doctors office, I would have been warned I was on the edge of pre-diabetes. There was also no concern that it had gone up 3 points since the last time.

I think I would have become pre-diabetic in the next few years if I hadn't got curious about what all my blood test numbers meant.
