Chinese consumers are now turning vegan πŸ’š

β€’19 Replies

Hi everyone,

I found this interesting that the Chinese middle classes desire for meat alternatives is growing just like it is in the Western countries but what shocked me was the amount of food wasted in China amounts to 40% of whats on the dinner plate. This to me shows that plates are 40% too big!

Food waste is not in anyones best interests so its good that consumers are looking at their actions.

Here's the article in the Guardian, please see:

theguardian.com/world/2021/...

I'd like to remind members of Vegan foods for Life the HU community for all things vegan and run by our friends so please check them out:

healthunlocked.com/veganfoo...

It's for vegans and anyone interested in plant based living so all are welcome. The cake was a birthday cake made by my vegan friend and neighbour for her partner and I was invited around for the celebration.

Hi Jerry

This is very good news and just goes to show the impact of the Vegan Market and of course Veganuary is a huge promoter of veganism and I think makes people stop and think what they are eating.

I have to say that woman sniffing the meat in the market was awful, just to think that's dead flesh she is sniffing. I so so glad I do not eat meat and I know full well there's no way I could go back to eating it.

Thank you very much for sharing.

Thanks Alicia and I didn’t like that photo either. We are becoming more aware of what we are really eating and even better the consequences.

Enjoy your evening now. 🌈😊

We really are becoming more aware which can only be positive. I meant to say the food waste is astronomical, the amount of money it's costing to waste that much.

I also forgot to say the cake looks awesome.

Have a great evening Jerry.

Wow that's a lot of food waste! I wonder why it's so high?

I managed to fill an entire food bin (5L capacity) with off cuts in just one cooking session the other day (cauliflower leaves, peels, pepper stalks), I need to find ways to reduce without cutting back on my veggies πŸ€”

Can you start a compost heap in your garden if you have one? If not your local council should be willing to collect green waste to compost.

Unfortunately the neighbours have been reporting rats in their gardens, so I'm wary of anything that might attract them to ours!

We do have food/garden waste collection at least, so it does get composted by the council, but I dislike the amount we produce sometimes.

in reply to Cooper27

Hey I agree and was really shocked by this claim and this a difference with the remains of food prep but wasting 40% of their food is a lot. I have a compost bin and have no intention of cutting back on veggies.

It would be interesting to know how much of the outer leaves stalks and stems we buy and guess frozen veggies eliminate this...😊

Hi Jerry I bet you enjoyed the cake and your house was deffinately fated to you as you deserve nice cake and tea invitations like that lol, that photo off the flesh holding and smelling was arful we went round markets abroad and it was arful the lobsters alive with claws held together so sad, I could never be a vegan I'm afraid as I do love my fish n chips I'd never eat lobster and I used to love crab until I found out about drowning them my niece n nephews dad was a lobster and crap fisherman there's so much unecassary suffering with what we eat, and I guess I'm not as nice as you vegans as of my love of fish I only eat cod haddock salmon tin tuna and strangely enough I like cat fish lol😁😺

Thank you Mandy it was a nice treat and her partners birthday.I’m not a vegan but I eat lots of vegetables so have lots of vegan meals but I don’t judge what others eat and enjoy eating so you enjoy your choices. 😺

Why are you (and everyone else) discarding cauliflower greens? They are quite delicious cooked as any other leafy green, or just incorporate them into the dish you are making with the rest of cauli, like cauliflower cheese.

That’s exactly what I did today Subtle_badger, used the greens in the cauliflower cheese.πŸ™‚

I think I have a vastly different idea of what healthy food is. I am happy enough with the photo of a woman expertly examining food that has always been a part of her ancestral diet, but back away from the cake. I haven't eaten anything like that in over a year and my health has improved immeasurably in that time.

While it's possible to be a healthy vegan if you focus on whole foods and supplement wisely, many ultra-processed junk foods are also vegan, and it's ultra-processed food (with or without animal derived ingredients) that is literally killing us with metabolic disease, obesity and diabetes. Most fake meat also seems to be highly processed, and we shall see the harms they cause in the future.

The ethical issues are also important, but only as an aside in a group devoted to health; and they are not as clear cut as some seem to think.

Hi Subtle_badger the cake was a birthday cake for her partner and they eat whole foods and excercise a lot and are fitness freaks. He used to teach martial arts and looks lean but not mean.I have no interest in fake meats or the takeaway vegan foods. I’m a vegetarian and many plant based foods are also gluten free and that’s the cross ove for me.

I don’t have to worry about my weight as I have an active lifestyle and eat healthily so yes a slice of birthday cake just around the corner and during the pandemic git my vote.

I posted the photo to show what can be made gluten free and plant based.

I’m pleased that you’ve found a dietary regimen that works for you as that’s what counts. πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜Š

What a beautiful cake, I hope you enjoyed the celebration Jerry.

Its great how well the vegan market has improved, shopping lunchtime I happened to notice that Wicked have brought out some choc and Cherry Ice Cream Cones, they looked lovely and Magnum have just launched there newest additon - vegan salted caramel.

We do need to be less wasteful and reuse things more. I have never replaced anything unless its broken and try to reuse things where possible 😁

Thank you Debs and being the pudding club we know a nice treat when we see it. 😁

The Wicked ice creams sound lush as do the Magnum and Bounty ice cream bars are on the horizon I believe. So the never ending want for plant based food is the fastest growth market so lucky us!

I agree as food waste especially is counter productive.

I hope that you enjoy your weekend now and soon it will be vegan ice cream weather...🍧🌝
