Salad storing advice

fedupoffeelingtired profile image

Hello everyone hope you are all well and safe.

I'm after some advice on how to store my own mix of salads. I am fortunate to work for a veg wholesaler and try lots of veg. I love trying the different lettuce and am trying to do my own mix, like the salad bags you can buy in the supermarket. I get fresh crispy lettuce and Even though I wash and thoroughly dry the leaves they don't last for long in the fridge. I do enough to last 2/3 days and store it in an airtight sandwich box. I don't add cue/Tom or anything that would add moisture into the box. But the leaves wilt and go yucky. Any advice or tips would be great.

I look forward to reading replies to your question. We are challenging ourselves to eat a salad a day. Hubby loves salad... me not so much... Granni B

I don't dry mine. I wash them and leave them very wet,, and put them into an airtight plastic box in the fridge, making sure the box doesn't touch the back and get too cold. I keep green salads for ages like this.

I've seen specific containers for storing salad, which has a basket inside, so the leaves sit a little above the floor of the tub. It suggests an important factor is air flow and preventing the leaves from sitting in a pool of water.

I have also worked part time in catering jobs, and they would store lettuce in big tubs full of water, which kept it fresh for a little longer.

I’m interested in the suggestions you receive for this question too as I like salad mix but have not tried to make my own. This year I’m going to grow some so they will be fresher before storage. I have revived leaves by putting them in iced water then spinning them in a salad spinner.

You can buy a dozen tall canning jars and prep your salad goodies(carrots, cucumbers, etc) and have them ready to pour in when it’s time to eat🥗

The lettuce, I need some tips too🙂

One thing I do is use arugula or baby kale instead of lettuce, I enjoy those vegetables and there’s not much prep.

I’m not going to be any help except to confirm that I’ve had the same problem as you. I now keep the salad ingredients whole and freshly prepare. The only partial success has been to put the lettuce in a ziplock bag and squeeze the air out before closing it.

I have seen a couple of tv shows where they suggest putting a piece of kitchen roll in the bag to help the lettuce stay fresh - it does seem to help a bit. And also to put slightly wilted lettuce in a bowl with iced water for a few minutes which is meant to freshen it up - I haven't tried that tip though .
