Supermarkets prepare for COVID 19 panic buying.

Hi everyone,

There is an emegerncy group set up by the supermarkets farmers and those in the food chain to Feed the Nation during the coronavirus.

Where I live the supermarkets have been out of hand sanitisers for weeks hand soap and now flour and pasta is sold out.

The biggest threat to the food supply chain is from workers becomning ill and supermarkets are plannig on having a smaller selection but plentiful supply of foods

The more that we do to protect ourselves the better as this helps to protect others.

If people would just stop panic buying, there would be enough to go round. I was reminded of the newspaper squares hung on string in the outside toilet when I was a child.

True, and I imagine a lot of that "emergency" food will end up going to waste.

The situation is a lot more serious over here in Asia. Also panic-buying going on.

Luckily I'm virtually off-grid and live on two hectares of functioning farmland, so I'm not so worried about the worst-case scenario aside from a possible breakdown of law-and-order (it's already pretty broken-down here already, but it could conceivably get much worse).

We live in interesting times!

Hi Tony, I thiught the same and wondered how much would end up being given to food banks.

All we can do is try and stay safe and protect one another, so stay safe Tony,

Apparently food banks are really struggling just now :( people are panicking whether they have enough food for themselves, so they're not giving any away!

I can’t imagine living in a place where law and order has broken down, stay safe. People act very strangely.

It's very sad my local supermarket has sold our of flour and pasta now as well as soaps and pain killers.

Went to Tesco this morning for flour (very limited), Paracetamol (got some but they are in short supply) and I was told they didn't have any a little while ago), hand sanitiser (none - signs up saying they do not have any or hand wipes) and we noticed several large gaps on shelves throughout the store. Crazy!

Hi springcross earlier in the week I was i my supermarket and one chap had cleared the shleves of 6 packs of baked beans it looked ridiculous in their trolley!

I was really shocked this morning at Tesco Pharmacy when I was told that they were only allowed to sell one box of Paracetamol. My husband has been using it for about 30+ years for his arthritic knee. They tell us that we should stay in as much as we can but we have to keep going out to get more painkillers. 😠 Completely nuts!

The irony is we are making things worse for ourselves.

Next week it's going to be much sunnier and warmer and Spring like in the UK so we will have Mother Nature on our side with increased UV rays with longer daylight hours so hopefully that will help.

Well if we are made home bound, we can take advantage,

Work in the garden and if wet get the loft cleared out. More worried about my hospital appointment on Monday and then our upcoming holiday in mid April. Health first, nothing else is any good without that.

This us quite right kitchengardener2 and Spring is the idea time for these things. So good luck with your hospital appt on Monday. 😊

Surely the supermarket manager should be stepping in. But then again he could trigger violence if he did. What type of people have we turned in to. And this is only the beginning. Sad not funny.

in reply to Lesley1234567

I don't know what the answer is Lesley but it is sad and the shelves will soon be restocked. Lets hope people don't catch the virus out panic shopping...

They are probably too stupid to think about that 😂😂😂

LOL 😂

Hi Jerry

I totally agree with you re looking after ourselves and of course being sensible, not panic buying. I bought some GF pasta today as I'd just about run out but was amazed to see even that was running out.

in reply to

Thanks Alicia and at least you managed to get some GF pasta. 😊

in reply to

Thank you and I'm glad I did, particularly as I cannot tolerate normal pasta so it was a bonus I got some.

It's such a shame so many are full on panic buying :(

The person my partner sits next to at work called in with flu-like symptoms on Thursday, so I opted to pick up the week's food shop a couple of days early, in case we were told to isolate too. It did feel a bit like we were joining the panic, given how busy the supermarket was, but I think we had sound reason! And on Friday morning we were both told to stay home for a week too, so it's a good thing I did something :)

Whether I've bought enough/too much/too little for the week is another question. I hate shopping without a list.

Well this is kinda New for us? Nobody out there knows what’s going on? Nothing consistent, so where doing what Humans Do trying to Survive. Nobody’s thinking about consequences of all this, we have children tgat need to eat and grandparents to take care of that is a priority in our heads is protecting our Family. People can’t be at Fault for this, we had to take matters into our own, even if it’s Wrong? Now I read that people are going Crazy buying guns, WRONG!!!

Is it only Tesco shoppers that are going mad and stockpiling, because my son lives on his own and has hobbies that he enjoys on a Saturday so he goes shopping early. He went today at 6.30 am and the shop was packed. Cornflakes were not taken out of the main carton just placed on the floor and people grabbed packets before they were placed on the shelf. I saw several smaller shops in a local town and they had the usual variety of products and no crowds.
