I'm struggling at the moment as everything i eat turns to acid indigestion. I follow a gluten/dairy free pescatarian diet. The Dr has prescribed Lansoprazol which I used to take for years but I gave up due to side effects (sensitive system!) so have taken a week's worth but I'm sure they've scrambled my brain!
Can anyone advise what's best for calming the digestion apart from drugs?

Hello cog4 welcome to the group and thanks for introducing yourself.
GERD is very uncomfortable and many people suffer from it and to me it it the symptom of an imbalance in your gut and many things can exacerbate it including a Hiatus Hernia so I'd have this checked and here's a link to the NHS and GERD.
I hope that this helps and we are a diverse friendly bunch of foodies so you are in great company for all things healthy eating and I hope that you find the answers you're looking for as acid indigestion is very unpleasant.
I forgot to mention that I have a Hiatus Hernia discovered during endoscopy some years ago and consultant noted a ‘sore spot’ in my stomach but he wasn’t “worried about it”!
I think I’ve been tested for Celiac and also very recently been tested for Helicobacter Pilori - negative.
I sometimes feel down with all the avoidance and sore stomach - I lived on Gaviscon and Rennies before the weeks stint on Lansoprazole.
Sorry to moan.
It’s just lovely to be in contact with likeminded people.
Hey cog4 you've every right to have a moan as its hard work when something goes out of balance with our bodies, so good luck and you'll get plenty of support on here. 😊
I have had dodgy digestion for years, become gluten/dairy free because of reactions and intolerance. I think I know what upsets my gut but still have problems, that's why I posted.
I agree with you cog4, I asked my nice GP how long he had studied nutrition and digestion of food at medical school, " half a day" he said, he did not think it was long enough. I found a natural way to stop the nasty gut problem and I have not needed omeprazole or lansoprazole for 7years, no prob with my hh either.
Unfortunately many of the things you mentioned to help indigestion actually gives me indigestion - even water (I’m on bottled). Bicarbonate also aggravates the acid.
I don’t understand why.
I will quiz my new Doctor and perhaps get an appointment with the specialist who gave me results after my endoscopy.
Yes there are many indigestion remedies out there that I cannot take mint/peppermint gives me indigestion but ginger sounds good. In fact I have problems with lots of foods and seem to be avoiding more and more!
Thanks. Yes it’s difficult to know who to turn to and I’ve been looking for help for years! Ever since having been tested for gluten and other intolerances (York Test many years ago!) I regularly have to give up a food stuff - latest is celery.
When my (new) Dr returns from holiday I’m going to have to plead for help.
Yes I try to eat earlier than 6pm but still have to catch up on drink (one coffee early in day and very weak tea for the rest).
I was drinking Rooibos but found my stomach reacting to it and I’ve been drinking it for years!
My previous doctor had made comment “you’ve been taking this tablet/food for years why do you think you’re intolerant of it now?” Really helpful! In fact this practice delights in confirming that they “don’t believe in intolerances”
I don’t eat huge amounts of carbs because of gluten so rarely eat between meals.
I’ll have to prop myself when I sleep at night but that brings disturbed sleep😒
You might need to change your medication, even sometimes if the normal branded drug you get from the chemists is changed to a different supplier this can cause issues,I'm on omeprazole and will be for the rest of my days, ive always had a dodgy stomach, occasionally I might have to take an extra tablet just to keep on top of the acid, don't buy over the counter remedies and mix them with your tablets as this could cause other problems, the acid, burping are not pleasant, don't smoke, and avoid alcohol, as these are irritants to the stomach, certain foods I avoid ,onions do me no favours,I can taste them for hours on end,so I suppose its all depends what 'repeats' on you,all trail and error, hopefully you'll be acid free and be able to enjoy your food, good luck.
I have taken somac for years , since really I have had af, works so well, you could try mylanta if you don't want to take drugs for it. Otherwise keep off fatty, spicy and stodgy food.
Merely supplemental non-drug ideas if you’d like to consider 💡🤔 , cog4, to help calm digestion:
From Dr. Michael Klaper, “Digestion Made Easy: Journey thru Your Amazing Digestive System” ( rawfigs.com/video-play/dr-m... has timestamps ⏱ for navigating content of video):
I suffer from Acid Reflux too, I know your pain. I take pills for it, but I did notice when I was eating the Whole 30 diet plan that during that all of my Acid Reflux and heartburn stopped, so for me that worked.
From experience I can say that eating sugary foods (especially sodas) or high carb foods caused me to have Acid Reflux, as well as eating late at night, or eating a big dinner.
I drink Kombucha which seems to help, and Apple Cider Vinegar seems to help too.
There are several websites dedicated to Acid Reflux and Heartburn that might give you information, but the best advice I can give is just make sure you don't eat anything within at least 3 hours of going to bed. Sleeping with an empty stomach is really the only way to be sure you don't have acid reflux, also make sure you do not eat high carbs and high sugars during your last meal of the day. For some reason high carb foods, high sugars and carbonated beverages give me bad symptoms if I eat them during dinner.
