Lycian tomb located in Uçagiz (Ulagiz).

Hi folks,

I just completed this drawing.

I didn't actually know what the structure was at first and did not know the spelling of the village it is located in but with the help of some friendly people the picture is in fact a Lycian tomb and it is located in a village called Uçagiz (Ulagiz).

I drew this for a friend of mine.

The art is great, but have never heard of Eulogies or Ulages, I have been going to Turkey now for over 10 years 2-3 times a year I have even looked as far as Greece and Cyprus for you

Thanks mascot :).

When I asked my friend what the place was called in Turkey, she said it was Eulogies/Ulages. Then said it was on an island and the village was called that.

I looked on the map and couldn’t find it either.

But she has got a painting of this structure back in the days above her fireplace.

I wanted to find out the name of this structure/monument and also find out the spelling of this village too :).

Hi Matt, the only other place I can think of is Ephesus, full of ruins and architecture that was Temple of Artemis which was recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, I may be going of the beaten track now but still worth a visit if you are ever there

When I was looking around on the internet for it, Ephesus popped up a few times.

Temple of Artemis, thanks for that :).

I had a little browse on the net at Ephesus and Temple of Artemis... it's not that.

I don't know how you spell the name of the village but it sounds like you-la-jees.

Kind of like Ulysses but with a la-jees :).

Hi Matt, this is a wonderful drawing with lots of detail so is very impressive, I thought that it might be the ruins at Ephesus, not that it matters. 😊

Thank you Jerry :).

I did look at images of Ephesus. lots of ruins but no structures like the one I drew.

Hi Matt, I have to agree and I think these are Roman sarcophagus and they look just like these in Ucagiz:

Thanks for the added help Jerry :).

I found out from Kai that the structure/monument was in fact a Lycian tomb/sarcophagus but I didn't know where abouts it was. I mean, I knew of the place but could not find it.

A village called Eulogies or You-la-gees, don't know how you spell it.

But the link you posted I think tells me the answer Uçagiz.

The 'C' has a little '5' underneath. French words with this 'c' or'ç' is pronounced like "th".

I'm assuming as the 'ç' in Uçagiz is pronounced like an 'L'.

in reply toMatt2584

Hey you're welcome Matt I was intrigued and like you say you were saying it phonetically and Uçagiz doesn't slip off the tongue...so mystery solved.

It's a great drawing regardless. 😊

I was also thinking that because the village name Uçagiz has the ‘ç’ in it that sounds like a ‘th’ in some French terms like provençale (proventhale), maybe my friend was wrong when she pronounced the Turkish village as Ulagiz and it’s actually Uthagiz?

Hi Matt2584

Your drawing is beautiful. I also thought of Ephesus - but of course it could be somewhere else - as you said, it's hard to know exactly where it is - and you mentioned an island village. I hope you are having a great weekend.

Thanks to you Kai, I now know that the structure/monument I drew for my friend is of a Lycian tomb :).

I was thinking as I was drawing it that it resembled a tomb but I wasn't definitely sure if it was one.

I had a quick look through the links you posted in the comment and I still can't quite recall the exact location.

Well, what a treat. Great drawing Matt. I just had an interesting wander round some of the pics of Lycian Tombs on the internet. As you say, these tombs are nothing like Ephesus. But do put Ephesus on your must-do list. I remember the morning I was there and the first view of the Library of Celsius against a perfectly clear blue sky, just like all the illustrations in the text books. Stunning. Sheila

Hi and thank you Sheila :).

When you say “Do put Ephesius on my must-do list” do you mean I should draw it?

I would gladly draw it and if you want to I can sell it and send it to you.

I am also a linked to the Headway community on HU and share my art there as well and have sold and sent some of my art through the post :).

Thanks Matt. I was actually recommending a visit. You would certainly find much inspiration there. Best wishes. Sheila
