"From City to sea campaign" Do you want to reduce your plastic waste and be part of the Tidy club?

β€’26 Replies

Hi everyone,

I saw about Natalie on the tv earlier in the week as they have another petition about reducing plastic waste and as this is very topical and especially after this enthusiastic reply to the latest poll by BoohPear who said this:

I usually take a cool bag if i know I'm getting lots of fruit/veg. Just open the bags, tubs and place in cool bag and there you have it ,all safe and sound til you get home and you can still have that cup of tea Jerry before you unzip it and easily deal with it. My J cloth type bag is for jacket potatoes etc. Are you joining my "tidy club" now!!!πŸ˜ΊπŸ˜ƒ

So thank you for telling us this and here's what Natalie has achieved so far so I am happy if you'd like a Tidy Club to help rescue plastic waste and I'm in.

We have a new Ecology Topic section now. 😊

Hi Hidden

I also take a 'cool bag' to the supermarket when I'm buying things, it's very helpful to keep produce cool etc.

Yes, I like the idea of this Tidy Club, and I'm in.

The new topic sounds like a great idea. :-)

Thank you for posting this, Hidden . I'm in for the Tidy Club and have been using cloth reusable bags for all types of shopping. :-)

Jerry they have to know about leaving the waste behind , like bags ,film etc or it just looks like we want them to use less carrier bags. Sorry if that's not your idea but that's mine how I do it 😺

in reply to BoohPear

Hey BoohPear I was showing what can be done when people get together as they have petitions about reducing plastic waste. From Sea to city has a new petition the last one one got over 250K signatures.

So this was to encourage members to adopt your idea as I think its is a great idea and I'll support it.

We can have a separate topic the Tidy club to promote your idea. So I am sorry for any misunderstanding as I really like your initiative with this. And others have replied to the poll that they'd like to be part of it.

Jerry 😊

That's a great idea for a new topic. We can say what we have done under the Tidy Club topic/title and add the topic to each posting. :-)

Sorry Jerry i read it wrongly. I just thought people would think it plastic carrier bags again. You're the person who can do something with this idea because I do it and it works. Without you it would be as it is up to now,,just me doing my best.

Sometimes pain meds dull my thinking and sometimes anti deps speed it up so not always easy. BUT I thank you for what you are doing and hope people will continue to be enthusiastic over all plastic waste.😺

Hey it's a great idea it was my fuzzy logic playing up...I think it's a great initiative of yours. 😁

Hi Hidden

Thank you for posting this.

I'm in, I'm all for re-using plastic etc. I always take bags when I go shopping and when buying loose fruit and vegetables I put them straight in my shopping bag, I do not use the bags the shop provides.

Also, I do what my mum used to do and that is re-use plastic freezer bags. I was them out when I have dishwasher and leave them to drain on the side, I haven't bought freezer bags for a long time. I do need to improve on the use of cling film though and that is for me to sort out.

Hi Alicia, what you say is really interesting as we can all do things to save on plastic. I use plastic boxes for storage in the freezer mostly or a tie on opened frozen veg bags. But I have to confess I don't wash any to re use.

I was pleased as I bought some of my favourite tea bags and they were in a box with no cellphone and I like that. So the manufacturers are catching on but sadly the really big problem is we are a consumer society and we have been taught to consume and then consume some more and now we have become a throw away society.

So it is up to us to all make small changes that gradually add up and we will have to have follow posts to help each other save wasting valuables resources. So BoohPear has done us proud. πŸ˜€

I too reuse my freezer bags, when they are clean and dried I pop them back in the freezer until I need one, my logic being if there is any nasty bacteria lurking it will freeze to death.

in reply to Lesley1234567

Like minded I'd say. What a good idea to put them back in the freezer I've never thought of that, that's what I'll be doing from now on as well. A good tip, thank youπŸ˜€

Bees wax wraps work as well as cling film. Easier to use too. Expensive initially but just wash and use over and over again. I have seen videos of how to make them but haven't tried it yet. I haven't used cling film for over a year now

I also use reusable sandwich wrappers ( like little napkins with velcro) and a reusable bag to store my bread in. My washing line has always got a dripping washed plastic bag hanging on it.

Morrisons and Tesco take plastic wrappers ( not the crinkly kind ) like those for bread and cabbage for recycling but don't really advertise it. My local Tesco has the container for recycling plastic up at the end of the store tucked behind the photo booth! I do my shopping and if I have had to buy something in a bag just recycle it straight away.

However the message shoukd be to go for the things that have no wrapping at all.

I find it bizarre when I have a trolley full of unbaked fruit and vegetables that the check out still tries to put my buttermilk in 'a wee bag' .

Interesting

Hi Jerry

Thank you. I've been washing plastic bags for a long time now.

Isn't it great finding things that aren't wrapped in cellophane. On saying that you made me realise that the tea bags I buy don't have cellophane.

Yes sadly we are a consumer society and we need to get out of it, Governments need to listen.

I've shared your article on Facebook, it's so good and I want more people to see it. I will probably write to my NP when j get home and send the article to them.

Hey well I'm in. trouble then if you've had to contact your MP...😁

Ha Ha, the Government need badgering about this. It's a 'one trick pony' at the moment as everything is Brexit. I won't be horrible to you, I'll keep your name out of it🀣🀣

Hi Alicia, I'm up for a gluten free vegan chocolate digestive brexit...πŸ˜‚

Does everyone realise that most tea bags have plastic in them. Clipper brand is one of the few who don't

in reply to deejames

Hi Dee, PG tips has also stopped using polypropylene as a sealant and the Co-op are working to make they Fair trade Rea bags polypropylene free. I bought some of the new PG tips and the box isn't wrapped in cellophane anymore either.

Manufacturers are waking up to consumer demand for biodegradable packaging at last. 😊

I’ve not purchased or used plastic bags in a long time, I have a variety of shopping bags that I always take with me plus a large and a small cool bag. I love shops where they package in recycled paper bags and always compliment them on it. When shopping I avoid pre packaged fruit, veg, salad and also use my recycle bins. I have reusable water bottles now and filter tap water rather than buy bottled water. x
