Hi everyone,

On the latest poll BoohPear said how they leave the plastic wrappings with the supermarket:

if I can I take my veg out of the plastic once I've paid and just leave it all behind.

I mean the plastic packing around the pre packed fruit/veg i just take off and leave behind. It's my way of saying I don't need all this useless harmful stuff so I leave it

I hope it makes sense to a lot of people who can leave packaging behind in a tidy and responsible way and not just throw it anywhere which is not responsible and would spoil the idea of doing it in the first place.

I usually take a cool bag if i know I'm getting lots of fruit/veg. Just open the bags, tubs and place in cool bag and there you have it ,all safe and sound til you get home and you can still have that cup of tea Jerry before you unzip it and easily deal with it. My J cloth type bag is for jacket potatoes etc.

Are you joining my "tidy club" now!!!😺😃

Three members responded in the poll that they'd like to join so have been assigned TidyClub badges and if any one else is interested then please say.

There is a TidyClub Topic as well so we can have regular updates.

I think this is a great idea as we can all help each other reduce waste, so well done BoohPear. 😊

I'm very happy to be part of this Jerry.

I was watching a programme on rubbish, there were about 4 episodes, and there was a company that recycled 95% of what they collected. This just proved that the Government can do a lot more.

in reply to

Thanks Alicia, all done and I'm very impressed with 95% recycled so good for them. 😊

in reply to

The programme was very interesting and I was also impressed with the recycling rate. More people i.e. councils need to follow suit. 😀

Sorry, I think missed the original post...so you are saying unpack everything before coming home from the supermarket, so what happens to the packaging then? Don’t we need to be putting pressure on the supermarkets to improve their packaging and make it recyclable? What do we need to be doing within the tidy club? x

in reply to Caz28

Hi Caz28 , The premise of the TidyClub is we rock up at the till and unwrap and leave unwanted plastic wrappings behind with the supermarket and if enough customers do this the supermarkets would have to take more action.

So I'm sorry I should've explained better, the TidyClub came about because of these replies in the latest poll and I should have collated the replies better. So I have edited the post to include this written by BoohPear

Hi Caz28. When I'm shopping i loosen the packaging then put item in trolley. When the goods go through the checkout it's easy then to slip the "celery?" into my cloth bag, my " nectarines"? into my cool bag and so on. When I've paid i screw up all the plastic and put into the nectarines pinned and ask cashier politely to pop into her rubbish bin. In Aldi it's easy to do as you pack your bags after going through checkout. Screw up the coverings and give to cashier as you leave. Yes we still need to be going to management as you say but there's nothing like making a stand in a polite, tidy, and responsible way. Enough of us doing this they will understand we don't want to take this unnecessary wrapping home. 😸BoohPear

Hi Hidden

I'd like to keep my 'Volunteer' badge, but I am interested in the 'Tidy Club' so will be keeping a look-out for all posts in this category. Here in Guernsey, there are quite a few initiatives going on to consider re-cycling, packaging etc. Infact the local newspaper reported today (front page news) that "Black bag rubbish is down by a half" and the Guernsey waste operations manager said it had been monitoring islanders' habits since the introduction of food waste and glass collections and charges and had "seen a dramatic fall in black bag rubbish".

Kerbside recycling has also increased, up around 500 tonnes compared to the first 6 months of 2018, and the amount of glass recycled is up around 15% since the introduction of collections.

"The new pay-as-you-throw charge for non-recycled waste, which came into effect in February, has also prompted a shift in behaviour".

I've also noticed that the supermarkets (e.g. Coop) are selling more loose vegetables - so you can bring your own bags and not have waste or unnecessary wrapping.

Hi Zest, nice to see your interest in the Tidy Club. Initially it was to help me bring all this waste home as even with paying £50 a year my council still only accept plastic bottles as waste. They have been known to search rubbish and throw out what they don't want. Yes I was that unlucky person!!!

I have even seen plastic items left at bus stop hoping a road sweeper will take them. As we can't make the council take what they won't we can at least leave it where it was purchased for them to deal with what they do already. As I say, that was my main aim. 😺

A great initiative BoohPear

Hi Zest, I think its great we have really good recycling here much better than in the city and we put plastics cardboard and glass out separately. I generate so little waste I often put my wheelie bin out once a month.

So this is great telling us what you do in Guernsey. 😊

I use mesh produce bags. I also use cloth grocery bags. I even used (before I left it in the store) an insulated cooler with reusable ice packs in it for my frozen veggies. 😁

Hi HealingArtist, that's really good news. Just what we need to hear. Have you thought of joining the Tidy Club? You just tell Jerry that you'd like to join the club and he will send you a badge. You can then leave tips, or suggestions, or tell us any reactions you may have had from the shops cashier or anything really. Thank you. BoohPear.😺

I hate the fact all the plastic fruit trays can’t be put in the recycle bin.

BoohPear profile image
BoohPear in reply to Caz28

Hi Caz28.Yes a real pain but these stack so nicely and sit so well at end of checkout. I know it's easy to remove bags or film but after you've paid you could maybe undo fruit and pop in cloth bag or cool bag then turn round and leave these at checkout if cashier busy or hand to her saying" I don't need these thank you" or whatever you wish to say. It would be nice if you joined the club and left us feedback, comments, laughs or moans!! Thank you. BoohPear 😺

As I was saying in another comment, I don’t actually think these plastics that are deemed ‘recyclable’ really make a difference.

A friend of mine has said before that there is no such thing as recyclable plastic.

The REAL recycling of plastic is to reuse it.

Today, me and my family went to London and we stopped off at a fast food restaurant.

Not CRAPDonald’s... I mean MacDonald’s... awful company. No this was Five Guys. Expensive but much much tastier.

We have been to Five Guys quite a few times but this time we reused their plastic cutlery.

We brought in some straws of theirs and plastic knife and forks.

Afterwards, use the loo and wash them out and take back home for next time :).

Hi Matt. Well done with you reusing your plastics at Five Guys. We've shared messages about plastic waste already so I wondered if you might like to join us in the tidy club. You have so much to offer, so many great ideas we'd love to hear about. Thanks.BoohPear😺

Oh yes I'm in .... and wondering what will happen when I hand back the unwanted rubbish to the cashier.

What kinds of comments do you usually get when you hand over the rubbish ?

Hi. I use 2 supermarkets and they have got used to me now. At first it was , "you what, what you mean". The usual kind of response, " what do you want me to do with it"

I used to say, politely, " I don't need this thank you can you put in your bin". Then I'd walk away rather than start a rant if it looked like the cashier might have a go at me !!!

In Aldi you pack your bags on a long shelf unit after paying so it's easy there to take your time. Squeeze plastic up and on way out as I pass a cashier i lean over and say. "I don't need this thanks." They are usually very good there and I've never had an unfriendly response yet.

Good luck and enjoy your next shopping trip.

Let us know how you get on. Thanks.BoohPear😸xxx

Morrisons has a bin in the entrance for used plastic bags. you can put polythene wrappers, bread bags, cereal box liners in there too. also the discount german markets according to a recent programme sell boxes of the sort of veg others can't sell. morrisons does a wonky veg box as well. so less veg going to land fill just because its past its best. things are getting there.
