Todays poll on food additives.

Hi everyone,

I think that we the consumer take so many things for granted with packaged and processed foods that we don't know what lots of additives are and where they are derived. I was surprised myself which's why I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone else thinks.

I will post what they are and how they are derived soon so this is not a quiz its an honest appraisal of who knows what some of the additives invert day foods really are.

I think its important to know what we re really eating. 😊

I believe additives ending in "-ose" usually mean sugar.

E numbers are ones I find confusing, because some are natural and others not (e.g. E100 is just turmeric).

Citric acid surprised me, as I recently learned it's a mould, after years presuming it's just a derivative of lemon juice...

Hi Cooper,

Here's a link to a really good list of E no's,

Citric acid can also be a wheat derivative and contain traces of gluten, the same as caramels E150 a b c d

Artificial sugars are polyol's derived from starch/sucrose so can be wheat derivatives:

Oh interesting, I didn't realise they were potentially derived from gluten! Well I'll be mindful when I'm checking labels!

Fructose is sugar from fruit and glucose is the body turning carbs into sugar?

Other sugars ending in ‘ose’ like dextrose is usually a chemical type of sugar. You don’t want none of that.

But a page on the Dr. Mercola website mentioned the sugars ending in ‘ose’.

That’s a new one to me, I didn’t know citric acid was mould.

Makes me think though, when I started eating a lot of fruit and veg I used to add lemon juice and still do now cos I had read that lemons are very alkaline.

My diet was the opposite of alkaline, it was acidic, and I have also read before about how disease can thrive in an acidic body and alkalinity kills the disease.

So I now have more lemons as well as other fruit and veg to stay more alkaline than acids and I feel it has done me good so far.

BUT

There is still confusion amongst others cos people wonder how lemons can be alkaline foods when they have acid in them?

To that question I always think all acids are different and react to the body differently, I guess.

Apple Cider Vinegar is also known as an alkaline food but is an acid.

Oh yes Jerry, it’s very important that we know what we are consuming and for the food administration (or whoever) to add dangerous or potentially dangerous chemicals and other ingredients is an outrage.

Why do that?

I think there is more to it than making money. I mean, at the end of the day people don’t even need money.

As I always say money is about as useful as a used sock, it has no worth.
