Strawberries and ice cream a healthy treat or a sugar rush? πŸ“

β€’22 Replies

Hi everyone,

I personally love fruit and fruit and ice cream and I was going to have this after my lunch but was too full so this afternoon after being busy I had this bowl of strawberries with plant based ice cream raspberry and vanilla with flaked almonds and a little date syrup. The strawberries are locally grown and have a fabulous flavour.

I'm a coeliac so I have to all avoid gluten I prefer whole foods so to me this is a healthy happy treat and it's free from so not only gluten free but plant based. I see this as part of a healthy balanced diet and I'm not over weight diabetic or even pre-diabetic. I also enjoyed eating it and had no adverse effects.

Personally I think that we should all encourage each other to eat well regardless of our own dietary needs opinions and have noticed comments that are off putting to the poster because it isn't suitable for everyone.

So is it a healthy snack or a sugar rush...

Jerry. 😊

Oh Jerry that looks and sounds fabulous, those strawberries look lovely. Nothing wrong with a sweet treat, its what we do most of the time that matters πŸ˜‰

Is the rasberry ice cream swedish glace?

in reply to Kitten-whiskers

Hey thank you Debs, the strawberries are grown 12 miles from here and the ice cream is indeed Swedish Glace my local whole food shop keep the full range of Swedish Glace so I tend to mix and match...as there's nothing like variety...πŸ˜€

Hi Hidden

Wow, that looks so delicious and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I agree with Activity2004 that it's perfect for a hot day, and as Kitten-whiskers said - lovely looking strawberries. I'm admiring the raspberries of course! :-)

Zest :-)

p.s. I'm laughing at myself - might need my eye-sight testing - because I can't see any raspberries when I look the second time round - I really thought there were some there. Maybe because I assumed you'd add some in. :-)

in reply to Zest

Thank you Zest, it's raspberry ice cream. I know I eat lots of raspberries its just these strawberries are special, they're part of the supermarkets new ''I can't believe how expensive it is" range...😊

You're right that cream is healthier and I like either. The date syrup is a touch of luxury and you only want a spoonful and I’m lucky as I don’t have to worry about calories.

That’s right. Everyone can have something that makes us happy as a now and then type of food if we like it.πŸ˜€πŸ‘πŸ‘

I think for me it would be sugar rush, and might set my cravings off again. I’ve been buying the most gorgeous strawberries from local farm this week, and having them with double cream, they are sweet tasting enough on their own to me now without any added sugar. Might even have some for breakfast now I’ve got them in mind :))

in reply to PandQs

I agree that local strawberries are the best and so sweet much nicer than the cheaper imported ones and a great treat with cream. I eat fruit with cream much more often than with ice cream I just like both and don't have weight issues. πŸ“ 😊

Just told my son to try them before automatically sprinkling with icing sugar - he agreed they didn’t need them. I’ll be sorry when the local growing season finishes!

Well it looks good enough to be really bad and naughty!! I say enjoy every mouthful as you are clearly knowledgeable about your dietary needs.

For anyone who has a problem, may I suggest buying diabetic ice cream? The one I give my diabetic and Parkinson’s husband is called Frank’s Dialicious Vanilla (Morrison’s etc). My husband has no suspicion that it is a healthier option for him. Best wishes.

This sounds like a great option for anyone. Thank you for letting us know.πŸ˜€πŸ‘

in reply to Latinia

Thank you sheilamb, this is plant based gluten free ice cream and it contains 13g sugar per 100g so compared to many treats its not that naughty and with the fruit and nuts its not devoid of nutrition.

I can eat things like this sometimes because I could put on 25% more body weight and I'd still be in my BMI range as I have lots of exercise and am lean.

Your diabetic ice cream sounds a great alternative for diabetics so thanks for telling us about it. I think as your hubby has diabetes and Parkinson's he deserves a treat sometimes. 😊
