I'm a lorry driver who goes out on my start work day and comes home on my finish work day.
At the moment I take food with me for3/4 day of meals. Also have porridge with banana for breakfast and other fruit to see me thro the week.
Unfortunately I have my cash card with me. Now that doesn't sound to bad but I'll get motorway bad food with that. One day I'll have McD's the next day M&S sweet things and on and on it goes.
I've nearly done couch 2 5K. I've lost some weight from this but I'd like to lose more. I know I should give up the bad things but I need some advice on what to replace the with.
Hi, I just joined today. I'm following your post because I'm interested to see the answers you get as I'd like some tips on healthier alternatives to ready prepared food such as pies, chips, sausage etc. Sorry I can't be of any help myself. Must be difficult having to rely on Motorway services food as most of it seems to be 'fast food'. Well done on losing weight.
It's great that you've joined the Healthy Eating forum, and I'd like to wish you both success with your goals - I see you want to lose some weight and eat healthy foods.
I would recommend having a look around our various 'Topics' and also the information pages on healthy eating that are connected to this forum - I'll pop back with a link to that for you. Here it is:
Also, there is another forum on Health Unlocked called 'NHS weight loss' where they do regular weigh-ins (all free and very supportive) and there are also different activities connected to weight-loss going on there too. Here is a link if you want to have a look:
Wishing you a great week - and fantastic that you've nearly done Couch to 5k, Gazloc, maybe you might like the Tortoise & Hare Running club - also over in NHS weight loss. It's a place where we pop in to report back on our running. Great fun. A link to the latest one is here:
It's pretty tough trying to find something to eat when you're out on the road. Many years ago I was working on a gym service job that involved driving all round the country - and the fact is, 95% of the food on offer is either garbage or just very fattening. It's like that Monty Python sketch with spam and chips, egg and spam and chips, spam and spam and chips ... I probably put on a couple of kilos over those three months
Having said that, there are possibilities. You just need to get into a routine. This might be easier if you're driving the same route regularly and get to know the guys who run the cafes.
For example, a breakfast of eggs, bacon and sausage is more-or-less OK, but skip the beans, potatoes, and white bread - I used to have two regular breakfast shops where the boss was happy to do a 'custom' meal for me. Have a salad from M&S on the side. Try not to heap loads of sugar into your tea or coffee. Drink water instead of soft drinks. You can phase these things in fairly painlessly.
As for lunches, I find tortilla wraps are great when you're on-the-go. You can buy those bags of pre-washed salad, a grilled chicken breast or similar, and a pot of dressing, and just roll it all up; not the most exciting meal in the world, but it fills the gap.
I think I'll change the way I'm going to get my food. I d try the salad but it don't last to long in my fridge in the cab. I'll just do half a weeks shop then get the other half mid week. As they say, the fresher it is the better it is. Thanks for your advice. 👍
