Bread!

Hi all. I love bread but am avoiding it (and other starchy/sugary carbs) right now as part of trying to lose weight and get fit (hence C25K). I watched BBC’s ‘The truth about carbs’ the other week in which it stated that some breads are fine because they are whole grain but caveated saying some brands add sugar back in. Does anybody know any breads/brands that def don’t do this? Thx!

That's not really accurate. There is a modest difference in GI with properly-made breads, but if you're on a low-carb weight-loss diet, it's really quite irrelevant - it will still halt your weight loss (and more importantly, it will probably provoke carb cravings).

Once you're in a weight-maintenance phase you can start to slowly re-introduce bread - and as happycook said, just make it yourself! Then you know what you're getting. And yes, breadmakers are a lot of fun and produce great results.

The vast majority of breads on the supermarket shelves are made by the Chorleywood process, which means virtually no fermentation. Some researchers are suggesting it's this that's behind the gluten-intolerance epidemic.

I completely agree about the bread maker. I make all my own without additives and without over processed flours. Wonderful and so tasty!! In moderation !!
