I noticed a post from a few years ago where a member's partner found improvement with cognition and reduction in headaches from a low daily dose of creatine. There was some scepticism expressed in the replies which appears to have been unfounded.
Andrew Huberman released a podcast on headache management in February 2023 that includes a long section on the use of creatine in the management of post-concussion headaches, cogntion and fatigue.
Rather than detail the suggested protocol I'll link to the section in his podcast and the paper he based his interpretation on so anyone interested can draw their own conclusions. The paper was published in 2008 and was a small pilot with children under the age of 18 who had been hospitalised due to TBI.
Podcast Title:
How to Stop Headaches Using Science-Based Approaches
I had read about Creatine a while back and I’ve just started working with a physio who specialises in concussion (they themselves had a serious TBI) and they’ve suggested Creatine to me. So I started last week.
Early days for me so I can’t give any anecdotal evidence either way but will see if there’s any progress for me.
I think it might be hard to tell if it makes a difference, as will be trying lots of other protocols with this physio so may be hard to pinpoint where, if any, improvements come from. But I’m happy to try different approaches at this stage!
Thanks for the response. I’m just starting with a test run too.
Out of curiosity, what does is your physio suggesting? The dose that the research paper used is way higher than the typical dose used for exercise support.
Yes it’s very high in the study. I can’t remember the equation we used but it’s per kg of my body weight and after the initial loading phase which is 5g in 500ml 4x day, I’m on 7.5g per day. Will see!
