LPA application.

Have decided as I may have early onset dementia as displaying some symptoms of the disease that I would start the application for lasting power of attorney. Its something you do on line then print off. I'm the donor and have made my wife the attorney over my finances and stuff. Will take a few months but if my mental capacity goes she then can sort all stuff on my behalf. Hope we have done it right. Just felt right thing to do.

Has anyone else done this.

It's a really good idea W. I did my LPA too. Makes things a lot easier for our families - otherwise they have to apply to the Court of Protection after we lose mental capacity, which is expensive and long winded (I had to do it that way for a close relative)

Thanks for the reply. I don't know how this will go. I can't really speak or write so I worry that things could worse. I have moments of confusion but I know who everyone is and I know places and stuff. Will take about 20 weeks for the LPA to come through so may know how I'm going to be by then although I'm it's early onset dementia may be OK for years but it's tge unknown. Thanks again

Hi, I did this a few years ago after a dementia group gave a talk at our local headway.

I realised that a lot of early onset dementia symptoms are identical to a lot of head injury symptoms I had.

I know I didn't have dementia but got me thinking I would probably not know until dementia had took hold.

I set up the lpa and it is sat waiting should it be needed. Better than trying to bolt the gate after the holes has bolted sort of think.

Now you've got me thinking..... My memory is becoming worse than ever despite keeping my brain active and tested by word games, crosswords, quizzes etc. It makes sense for any of us to take the precaution of LPA with loved ones.

If it's unnecessary in the long run then all well & good ; nothing's wasted and everyone's reassured in the meantime.

Don't give up on the speech therapy though Dave ; it's still really early days for you !

A good decision. Following my friend's experience of sudden, unexpected brain injury, whete it took six months to get LPA and longer to sort out banks etc I have spoken to friends and nominated them then drafted the forms online. Ready and waiting.

Yes right thing to do. I am in the process of doing this. I would hate to cause my husband more problems. I had brain hemorrhage just under two years ago. It certainly brings it home to you how quickly your life can change. I have lost all confidence. My sight is a big problem, I have to block sight out of one eye. This is because I have double vision horizontally and vertically.

Just put into Google and go on the government Web site. You have to open an account like first with your e mail. Not difficult.

Actually I think everyone should consider doing this! We hadn't done this, so had to do Court of Protection when husband had stroke (which is expensive, drawn out and NOT easy). So I have set this up for myself now. The solicitor pointed out it covers you in case of severe sudden illness etc. But also it can be used if necessary on a temporary basis, with your permission (for example if you had an operation and couldn't do banking for a while) . Hope it brings you peace of mind...

yes everyone should have an LPA. Like Silkwood we had not done our LPAs and I have had to apply to the Court of Protection which is a nightmare. You have to pay for the privilege of them checking your partner’s/ loved ones money situation. If you own a house or flat jointly you have to apply again. And it takes ages for the paperwork to come through. LPS s are easy to do on line. CAB and other organisations can help you with filling the form. All the best
