I froze to death over a 6 hour period 29 years ago. I was in full cardiac arrest for 30 minutes. Recovery is possible. It just depends on the cause of the hypoxia, the amount of time down, the determination of the person who experiences it, and the rehab given.
sorry to sound bad I was in a. Induced coma for four weeks , dad had a heart attack, spent two weeks in his! Hope it all goes better, lots of support here! Please report progress, keep a stiff lip as trying timeslie ahead, good luck
hi…. It seems we have family members in similar situations… my dad has a hypoxic brain injury… required cpr due to cardiac arrest due to occluded airway..and had a stroke at same time, all from a medical injury during surgery.. absolutely devastating.
He is still in ICU, had emergency trachy etc BUT is doing better then the Drs ever said he would.
Biggest piece of advice I gained from my immediate research is to NEVER GIVE UP HOPE.
This is the toughest journey ever. Talk to him, let him know what’s going on in your life.. even if he’s not responding just talk. Hold his hand. Let him feel your presence.
have you got any specific questions your looking for answers on?
I wish you all lots of good healing vibes and hope that each day things get better for you all. Please keep us posted my thoughts are with you all x
Hi Sine,I am a fellow survivor, having gone through a hypoxic ABI following two cardiac arrests in 2018. I would say prepare to fight on behalf of hubby and don't let the useless NHS abandon him like they have me. Push for Neuro rehab if he comes out of the coma with paralysis. Nearly five years later, I have received none! I was told to watch YouTube by a locum! Warning: you may not get the same person back. This world still feels a little alien to me and my estranged wife , who now hates me, wants as little to do with me as possible. If there is a plus, it is discovering a natural ability to speak Spanish. I had never studied it not travelled to any country where it is spoken but, when they woke me up from my 17 day coma, I was speaking it and other foreign tongues too (the staff nurse was not specific beyond describing them as "many beautiful European languages". I speak English, French and some German and a smattering of Italian but no others. I am vulnerable and fall in love at the drop of a hat. I was always shy with the ladies but no longer. I wish you well on what will be a long and testing journey.
my son suffered a severe hypoxic brain injury three months ago. He spent several weeks in a vegetative state. He couldn’t talk when he woke up but seemed to understand verbal commands. He has since then learned how to talk again and walk. The injury has left him with memory issues and clonis both of which are slowly getting better. I have been told to have patience and that this recovery period will last two years. It seems that doctors expect most of the improvements in the first six months but after talking to a lot of people going through this, it seems that improvements continue for years. Don’t give up hope. My sons prognosis was grim and he has surprised his doctors. When my son was in a vegetative state, I held his hand and talked to him and played music. Never give up hope
