hi. My hubby had a sca 6 years ago. Left him with severe brain injury and disabled requiring 24 hours care. He was without oxygen for 20 mins so h as hypoxia . He has no memory. In the hospital he was put on olanzapine 5mg (anti psychotic) recently he was weaned off as not recommended long term. This didn’t agree so reduced to 2.5. Last few weeks he has been smacking lips moving mouth and moving hands all time. Neurologist thinks maybe a movement disorder or needs to go back on olanzapine! Any advice on this. Doctor is going to see him in new year. Thanks

I'm not sure where the caution over long term use has come from? This usually is used for long term conditions. There are cautions to monitor as it can build up in the body, and can effect other functions. Withdraw should be gradual, and monitored for two years after.Your husband was on a low dose (5mg) to start with. I would ask to talk with a pharmacist who is probably better placed to give you the required information.

hiwhy was your hubby put on this medication in the first place my hubby had hypoxia to and when he was in rehab he was first put on halpidorel which is also a anti psychotic because he had a movement disorder called chorea this medication did not work for him he got worse his hands started moving his tongue started rolling back and his face always moving basically It just didn't work for him than the consultant put him on olazanpine which was the first line medication for chorea which also didn't work for him he had lip smacking dystonia head shaking so they stopped this meds to

one of the side effects of any anti psychotic when you try to reduce it or completely stop it is shakes tremors parkinsom movements this is what happened to my hubby

now his on tetrabrinzine which really helps him with chorea without this med his all over the place with his involuntary movement

he was put on this medication due to his really bad agitation in the hospital! He was in a bad way, storming I believe they called it! Not sleeping, shouting swearing, it really calmed him over time. I do believe that the reduction even though only 2.5 has made him agitated again. Thankyou.
