Filling my brain injury acquired in 2008 I experience issues where I have a disconnect between what I’m looking at but my brain doesn’t register? My psychologist thinks it’s related to my defective attention but I wonder if anybody else has experienced the same?
Has anybody had any experience of seeing a neuro-o... - Headway
Has anybody had any experience of seeing a neuro-ophthalmologist?
I think I have something similar. I can be looking to find something specific - say my reading glasses in their case - and the object can be right in front of me, but I don't see it. If I look again, I will then see it. It used to really freak me out, but I am more used to it now. It happens several times a day still. Every medical professional I have told about it has just shaken their head and not told me anything - until a recent appointment with a neurological rehabilitation consultant. He said he believes that it is to do with my attention problems. When I saw a neuropsychologist a while back, she explained to me that I didn't just have memory and concentration difficulties, but that I had attention problems too.
I think the theory is that my attention is elsewhere, (perhaps focused on the idea that I am looking for this object,) and not on what I am seeing at that moment through my eyes. That's my theory.
It's really good to hear that I am not the only one with this sort of thing as I haven't come across anyone else with this before reading your post.
Best wishes. 🌼
Hi Mads, this can be due to, as you say defective attention. It is probably the easiest one to try to correct. I maybe wrong, but I assume that you had a series of tests over possibly a number of sessions, that has ended up with a report that says you scored x, y, z, percentiles compared to an average?
This is a pretty good indication of areas that may need attention. But what this is a generalisation assuming you started at an average before injury.
Other things that might be involved are particular parts of the brain that were damaged, where skills need to be relearnt.
I would hope that you psychologist is a neuro-psychologist. They are very different beasts in the scheme of things. A psychologist assumes it is an inner driver that cause certain behaviour to manifest, a neuro-psychologist understands how the injury alters how we behave.
Hi. Do you have any thoughts on how to work to correct this? If you could read my response I would be grateful for any ideas as I have tried everything I can think of with no improvement.
Thank you! 🌼
Hi Pair of Boots. I’ve had a number of neuropsychologist and I’m told my frontal lobe is the area affected (following TB meningitis).
I have seen two, but they found no problems, however I then went to see a behavioural optometrist privately who found multiple visual issues relating to processing in the brain and importantly solved them.
I also had attention issues and aphasia that were separate from the visual issues. Solved these also through repetitive activities.
Hope that helps.
Good luck.
Hi. My husband is going though assessments at the moment. There are issues with attention yes on his left. We are working with Glasgow Caledonian University who have an eye clinic. They are very thorough. He is specifically working with the neuro specialist. We have more assessments next week.
I have this issue with sight and hearing-it’s worse with lack of sleep. I can’t find things right in front of me. I also hear sound when someone speaks, but there is a delay in understanding what was said.
It’s not terrible-it’s caused me to be slower in responding-frustrating to others in our modern fast paced world. In a way it helps compensate for issues with impulse control/adhd.
It would be nice to know the "Offical" word for this condition so that you could look up some possible treatment options and hear the other experiences of other people. Agnosia?
Interesting…. Do you know what it’s called with the sound delay is called?
Hi,I used to experience words coming towards me when I was using a screen like a computer or tv. I saw both a Neuro Opthalmologist and Neuro optometrist. I have problems with convergence and cicad. A vision therapist has helped me tremendously and after much hesitation I finally received prism glasses which seem to be helping a lot with my vision issue. So far while wearing them during screen time I don’t get dizzy anymore and the words aren’t floating out anymore. I also continue with vestibular therapy now independently as the insurance has refused to pay for any additional sessions.
