Hello I am new here

I have been home from hospital since July 30th and mostly recovering well except for an infection which was first thought to be shingles I am half way through a week of antibiotics and hope this will do the trick. - has anyone else had this experience ? I was encouraged to join a web app called “calm” and have found it really helpful with flashbacks and nightmares- and daily exercises and rest. It’s great to know you are not alone with the shared repercussions of TBI and lovely to hear people doing normal things again - one of my greatest fears is not returning to things i love doing.

Hi. You will probably hear this a lot? It is early in your recovery to be worrying about what might be. Obviously you need to be realistic, but many activities that you once enjoyed should be achievable even if you need to adapt, or take a different path.

This forum is a friendly place, and I hope you will find useful. Please consider contacting the Headway helpline, contact details are pinned to this page, they have can offer direct support, and signpost you to others.

Best wishes 🍀

Thank you for your reply pairofboots - I will try the helpline again - they are so busy it seems to be “leave a message” only at the mo.

Welcome to the forum E - as Pairofboots says, early days. Ask anything you want to know on here, or just have a moan. Every brain injury is different. The apps like Calm and Headspace are really useful and it's good you've found it already.

Hi Ele and welcome. As others have said it's really early days for you after only one month. Eat healthily, drink lots of water and keep up the light exercise whilst your brain is still making sense of its injury.

As it operates during office hours, I'm guessing the Headway helpline will be back to usual hours on Tuesday, after the bank holiday... (freephone 0808 800 2244).

Best wishes, Cat x

Hi Cat thank you for your reply - its so lovely how caring this community is and I am so pleased i joined up.I actually received a reply this morning - unfortunately it coincided with a call from my neuropsychologist so they will call back later - like buses you wait ages then get two at once !!

Hope you are feeling well Elex

Hi there , just take it 1 day at a time and do not rush your recovery.

Thank you crazychick - wise words but its hard to be grown up and sensible about this condition isn’t it? It’s very helpful to know there are lots of others in the same boat though - thank you for taking the time to reply

Hi Elecheetah,

Hopefully you will be able to return to doing the things you love! As above posts, it is very early days - brain injuries are more complicated than a lot of other injuries in terms of recovery but everyone is different. You might find you have to adapt in doing the things you love, for example resting more or taking some time out or you may not, and may be able to continue as before. Good luck with your recovery…

Hi Elecheetah,

Sorry I should have said I don’t have a brain injury but my daughter had a traumatic brain injury 3 years ago so I know about the effects of such trauma.

Take care

Hi elecheetah you obviously have a good range of support from social services/the local authority, unlike most of us with brain injury mental health issues and now it has been announced lots of social services are doing cut backs...

Hello Charlie thank you for your reply - reading some others experiences I feel lucky indeed to have such brilliant support - it was my GP who first contacted the neuro team and they have all been wonderful - would it be worth asking headway if you can have some help in your region ? I hope you can - they would make a big difference i feel .best wishes Ele

Hi Elecheetah, I will simply say welcome,as others have pretty much said what you need to know... except maybe say yes to any offered help, because in the early days (at least where I live) it seems to be easier to get help than later on ....

Though I have also noticed some docs tend to work together and if you get in with their team you have a lot better experience than you wouod otherwise.

Best wishes,

Leaf
