Infections after cranioplasty?

Hi my brother, Ben, had a TBI a couple of years ago and had a craniectomy where they removed the whole front part of his skull. He has had two attempts since to replace it with a Titanium plate but both times resulted in infections and so had to be removed shortly after. He has got an appointment soon to discuss further options I think.

Is there anybody else out there who has had similar issues with their cranioplasty and been third or fourth time lucky? Just want to give him some positivity as he is losing more hope of living a normal life every time it goes wrong.

Hi Rachel. I'm sorry to hear about your brother's rough ride since his TBI. I wish I could comment with some authority but I only know what I've read, and from others here on Headway.

Infection isn't uncommon after cranioplasty, although more so (I gather) after replacement of the bone flap ; the titanium plate is preferred by some surgeons as a safer option but perhaps there's also an element of rejection in some cases ?

I can only hope the third attempt will include extra safeguards in theatre and more intensive monitoring afterwards, by everyone involved.
