Yes they’re very helpful, do you take them? They calm you down and less anxious so you can enjoy things more
I'm a bit nervous when it comes to anti-d's but Amitriptyline was written up for me to take for headaches. I haven't touched them as I remember the first time round they caused me gastric problems. But this morning I phoned the surgery to request Noratriptyline for frontal lobe headaches I've been plagued with for several days. Also, they were much better at sedating me for a good night's sleep. Have you taken any Amitriptyline? I'd be interested to hear how you get on with them.
Both, but never at the same time.
I was on Amitriptyline '92 (8 years post TBI) for about 6 months and they helped with sleep.
Fluoxetine 60mg for misdiagnosed OCD from 2002 till 2012. Then venlafaxine for a year which is the hardest drug ever to taper off from.
I went back on to antidepressants in October 2017 still on them but instead of a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibiter (SSRI) like fluoxetine etc, I'm on Agomelatine 50mg which is a Melatonin Reuptake Inhibitor which I take at night along with a low dose (2mg) of melatonin. When I first took it I managed 8 hours continuous sleep every night for 40 consecutive days but it's not quite as effective these days. I need my liver and kidney function monitored via bloods every 3 months. I also had to fight with NHS Scotland for 3 years to get it on prescription and got my first NHS prescription for it 2 weeks ago, Before that I had to pay for a private prescription for it costing £90 for a 28 day supply.
It's been the most helpful anti-depressant I've had though.
I took Amitriptyline for 20 years with no ill effects other than dry mouth, weight gain (from increased appetite) and constipation. The first couple of weeks were hard going whilst assimilating it, which is common with both the tricyclic & SSRI drugs.
Amitriptyline was an effective antidepressant but my doctor changed it to Prozac (Fluoxetine) in 1999 after SSRIs came into use. The Prozac made me too hyper and I eventually opted for Seroxat which seemed more compatible with my own brain chemistry, and which has kept me stable and fairly upbeat.

I took Amitriptyline for three years. I only really needed to for two years. I no longer need to take them.
I believe that you should take whatever helps you.
Whilst both anti depressants amitrityline is also presctibed for pain relief and not usually for depression
Yes I take amitrityline - was prescribed for head pain. take one at night only. Been told it helps calm the mind. I don’t have any side effects but only take 25mg.
Just stopped taking 10mg in the evening, been on it for 4 years+ for neuropathic pain with a happy side effect.
Tried to come it many times but found it too hard, harder than any other stronger drug.
Been on a cocktail of meds for all those years so I don't know what drug did what really, but I don't like being controlled and found that all I needed is to practice meditation, this has been the best medicine with the only side effect is that I am permanently content and happy 😁
Its amazing to now know what is actually Pain,Fatigue,Brain or drugs!!! Only on slow release Tramadol and Sertraline now and feel like the fog has lifted and I am more me than I've been since the accident.
The best medicine for dealing with our wealth of problems is Positive Thought, and that is extremely difficult when clinically depressed but once you've found the key...there's no going back!!!
