Early on in my rehabilitation after my haemorrhage I was unable to talk in full sentences (for roughly 6 month) and was given this chart to point at letters to spell out words when asking for something etc .
I was curious to know who/if anybody else used one of these charts to help communicate.

but you didn’t “ point “ to letters, you could only move your eyes at the time, so you would lock on letters with your eyes, I would say Waz spell (pick a word ), it would take a while at first as you scanned the chart for letters to spell the word, the every day/night/week/months the SLT put in consistently n you work so hard too,. Xxxx
Oh ye I forgot Blossoms2(mam).. you could say I pointed with my eyes 😬x
Definately yes.
Only problem was people around me started getting annoyed and impatient with me trying to spell out the words and taking longer than they wanted to hang around and see what I was saying.
With that being said..it gave me alot of frustration and anger.
Along with 4 plus head injuries, stroke, additional TIA's,I also landed up with DYSTONIA (neurological condition that affects your muscles).Doctors cant say the exact cause of the Dystonia but "head trauma" is on the list. With having it..when I have an Episode,I lose my speech and I sound like Im deaf.I get 2-4 Episodes a month,so talking to people is again super frustrating BUT not much I can do till my speech comes back.
I think the alphabet board is good if you have ALOT of patience.
I’m lucky to have patient people around me especially my mam who helped the speech therapist in gettin my speech back, my speech these days is far from perfect but at least I can talk 😁
Hiya my husband was attacked back in December and suffered a brain injury. 10 months later and he still can’t talk. We are both staying at a rehab unit where he is receiving SLT 4 days a week. We used this board also but my husband found it very frustrating. In his head there is no problem with his speech so it took us a long time to deal with that problem and he would use this board but wasn’t happy about it. Even now he can’t speak and we are using “key words” written down. Every day is a challenge but he’s with us and that’s a miracle in itself. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery xx
