What happens post rehab?

my son has a hypoxic brain injury and is three months into his rehabilitation. I don't know how long they are going to keep him for and what happens when he plateaus. what are the options for care once a person leaves rehab? do they just come home and have carers or are there other options following a brain injury?

I can't give a definitive answer. Your question is so broad.

Rehab will work with your son for as long as they can improve his quality of life. Following that he would normally come home. But if that is what you want, then they will assess your home for suitability and safety. They will advise if any adaptions are required prior to his return.

They should be able to advise on care packages that should make life easier.

They may move him to a care home until everything is in place to free up space for the next person who requires rehab. This might be the best of a bad option, as there are limited placements for younger people.

Obviously there will be consideration as to his capacity to make decisions around what he wants. If he doesn't have capacity, then this will fall to his next of kin.

The rehab service should keep you informed throughout his rehabilitation. If adaptions are required, there are grants from the council, and various charity's. Headway is good at advocating on behalf of your son and yourselves.

This is very generic, but I hope it gives you an idea.

Pairofboots has given excellent information on the next stage of your son's rehabilitation. It really is all about how able your son is, and whether you have the wherewithal to care for him full-time at home or whether he will need further care elsewhere.

Please phone the Headway helpline for support & advice on freephone 0808 800 2244 ; they can talk you through these difficult choices and help you feel more in control at such a challenging and anxious time.

How has your son progressed so far, as in signs of mobility, awareness and regards his sight issue ? Cat x

How old is your Son, if young, Education, Health Care Plan should be created. Meaning funding towards an educational or education rehabilitation residential however depends if you have facilities in county, but there are places dotted over UK whereby if in county cannot meet this needs to be explored, you can challenge for out of county. The health professionals, education psychologists, social care in theory work together on what is best suited.

Thanks everyone for your full and helpful responses. There is an MDT meeting due mid September and i guess I might have a better picture as to where everything is up to then and i may come back and ask more questions,
