Head injury after attempted suicide

Hi all

My husband is in intensive care after attempted suicide. He has serious frontal lobe injuries after landing on his head from over 30m

I am finding it hard to plan for the unknown. Not knowing what will lie ahead in his health in future.

I’m so sorry to hear that I know this must be excruciatingly difficult. Right now he has two options fight and be here or not and as hard as that sounds you have to be prepared for both kinda like me right now. It’s so unfortunate cause we love our men and we want them around but in your case suicide is when someone doesn’t want to be around, and for that I am sorry you have to be dealing with that as well as not knowing the outcome. For your sake I pray and hope things are not to be as grim and that maybe this attempt will be a reason to want to stay on earth with you. I’m really sorry and I hope this helps somewhat / may you both be in my prayers

We are on day 19. He has been off sedation for over a week. But we have had very little movement with his arms and legs and he is looking around.

They have said the brain is stable. They have operated on his broken bones. But it is just not know what lies ahead.

I'm so, so sorry for what I know you must be feeling right now. My father made a serious suicide attempt when I was in my early twenties and it was a frightening & surreal period for me, my mum & brother.

You obviously have no clue yet as to your husband's neurological or physical condition, but I doubt he'll have any recollection of trying to end his life. Most of us here have no memory of events immediately prior to our brain injury whether it be stroke, haemorrhage or an impact injury.

The fact he's conscious is a positive sign (and amazing after such a massive drop). But it could be a long wait to see developments. The brain, being such a complex and delicate organ is slow to heal, and its capabilities are invariably reduced when healing is completed.

So it's likely your man will emerge a changed person, but for the foreseeable future it'll be a waiting game......... best dealt with on a daily basis as even the most experienced medics can't/won't predict an outcome or a timeframe. The suicidal issue might not re-surface depending on the brain area damaged but, again, it's wait & see.

I suggest you phone the Headway helpline tomorrow where you can get advice & support from caring staff on essentials such as work or benefit issues, and information on the after- effects of brain injury and rehabilitation. You can call them on 0808 800 2244 during office hours and calls are free.

Please stay with us throughout this stressful period ; we will be rooting for you both and waiting for updates on your man's progress. Take care of yourself m'dear.

Sincere best wishes, Cat xx

My husband's brain injury was also caused by a suicide attempt. Phone Headway and talk to them, they will be able to give you lots of advice.

well you wont be able to plan until he comes out of itu and the docs have done their assessments.

you can expect mood swings, loss off memory, inappropriate behaviour and possible limb wekness.

I am a survivor of a slip and fall accident on July 4th, 2017. Ironically it's my un-independence day. I hit the base of my skull on the corner of the counter causing a coup-contracoup. In essence my brain played ping pong inside my skull resulting in frontal and occipital damage. It's been 9 or so months of hell for my husband. Though extensive research on my own part (I gave up on doctors after the 5th neurologist refused to see me for my newly discovered seizures) I have discovered that my thoughts and emotions prior to the impact have been playing in a loop even though it didn't feel that way to me. I was angry, I had just gotten home from working night shift, we had an argument, he went to bed and I thought I would paint to calm me down. Nope, spilled the paint, slip and bam. Even though I did not feel angry, my tone and actions clearly displayed anger to him. The frontal lobe is the CEO of the brain. Well think of it like the commanding officer in the military. If the commander goes down, whose telling the rest of the soldiers what to Do? I am so very sorry that you are going through this. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. As hard as it will be for you, as hurtful as his words at times could be, try to be strong and remember he probably doesn't mean for it to come out that way. I know I wouldn't have made it this far without my husbands love and understanding.

Also, try getting a diffuser and a bottle of 100% pure natural Frankincense (Boswellia serrata or carterri). It Can cross the blood brain barrier and increases oxygen levels in the brain. It has been scientifically proven to help heal the hard to heal brain injuries. I was a nurse before my accident and I am still today, just switched from traditional medicine to holistic. Hope O was able to shed some light and maybe a little hope?

Blessings from my family to yours.
