Just Saying Hello

Hi, I found this forum through the headway charity. I had a TBI 1981 and had delayed concussion and short term amnesia, I thought I had recovered from it but did notice I couldn't read books afterwards as my concentration was poor.

About 10 years later I was suddenly was hit with chronic fatigue, and became a total mess.

Things didn't improve for many years, but I didn't think the head injury was the cause.

I am still suffering today the fatigue isn't as bad but my mental abilities are shocking, I had a brain scan about 5 years ago which showed the brain injury, but the doctor said he couldn't confirm it was causing my problems.

When I recently contacted headway they advised me it was extremely likely my symptoms were brought on by the TBI, which would explain why over the years many different antidepressants didn't help.

I can only explain it that my mind is broken, with very similar stories to most of the people on this forum, I least I know I'm not on my own.

Good Luck everyone.

Chris

Hello. Just wondering, what's delayed concussion? I had a concussion then a second more minor head injury a month later which has likely caused permanent damage. Is this similar?

Delayed because I passed out 24 hours after the initial injury from a car accident, I was kept in hospital for a couple of days under observation as I had no recollection of the accident. this was only temporary amnesia though.

Hi Chriss

Sorry that you've had such a tough time over the years. Some of your symptoms do sound familiar. I use to read a book every couple of nights, which drove my then wife crazy. We were meant to be trying for babies! Now Ive not read a book all year. Also I cant seem to kick depression since all the brain problems.

But also anti-depressants simply dont work for some folk and some kind of talking therapy can help. For me, the only thing that seems to help atm is being with good friends and eating crisps; which is a pitty as they are on my anti-inflammatory autoimmune dont touch list! The crisps that is not the friends! Have you been to your local Headway group? Im planning on going to mine tommorow, snow covered roads allowing. You might find it a really good source of understahding and support.

I too feel that my mind is broken. But maybe if you can somehow kick the depression then your mind might feel more like it once did.

best wishes

R
