Sadly, a man with a TBI has been shot in America. His wife shouts out to the Police that he has a head injury and has just taken his medication.

What a bizarre scene. I'm more shocked by the wife's behaviour than the actual shooting. We all know (sadly) the trigger-happy reputation of the US police but, if that were my husband, I wouldn't be filming ; I'd be too busy running over to him to him to clearly demonstrate that he wasn't armed.

And after he'd been shot she continued filming, as if the police injustice was more relevant than her husband's life.

That aside, the level of shootings of black people by US police is a crime-wave in itself, and so often involves vulnerable individuals. x

It was all a bit strange - even disregarding the filming, why shout my husband has a TBI? how many people would understand that? Why was she so far away was she worried for her own life.

The person whom fired the fatal was a black police officer

Shocking scene. As reports say he had his arms down by his side and stepped back from the police. Again, perhaps lack of awareness of how TBI affects individuals. I wondered if he was sitting in a wheelchair, or a more 'obvious disability' , would US police acted in the same way?

I agree with Cat I would be rushing to my husband to assist him not to continue filming. i am so glad UK police's force are not armed with hand guns. I think I am right in saying it has not reduce crime in US.

Hi Sem,

When it comes to the gun control thing in America I always say that guns are not the problem, the people using them are.

Put a gun on a table and it won't do anything.

That poor man was shot because of that cop. Just because he had a gun makes him think he has the authority to shoot it.

According to an American friend of mine, gun crime has gone up after the gun control malarky.

I really would not like to be in America these days.

Hi Sospan,

I saw this on Facebook. Well, I didn't exactly see the video but saw the thumbnail image with it and the Headline and that told me enough. Very sad news though. I wouldn't like to be in America right now. I don't like their police force or their government.

The problem with incidents like this is that police officers seem to make the assumption that non compliance with instructions by the suspect is a deliberate and therefore suspicious act, thus they may be considered a potential threat. In reality, there are many reasons why someone may not comply through inability to fully comprehend the instructions/situation : drug/alcohol use, mental health, learning difficulties, brain injury etc. The taser was invented to halt what may be a potentially dangerous situation, without causing permanent harm, although some injury/deaths have been reported using this method that was deemed 'safe'. Still, in a confusing/suspicious situation, better the taser than the gun. x
