Hi Yojo,

It's good that you are meeting up with the OT to discuss your Dad's progress.

Firstly the OT will give you an update from the medical team and the allied health team that includes the physio, social worker, psychologist and of course the OT.

Here's some things you need to ask..

What is your Dad's current level of function? i.e. does he need assistance with walking, transfers off/on bed, chairs. How is his balance?

You need to discuss your home environment and your Dad's (if the plan is eventual return to his own home) as there could be potential safety issues. i.e. steps at front access, slippery rugs, poor lighting, bathroom/toilet set up needs to bediscussed to ensure that he is safe with all transfers. If necessary the OT can conduct a home environment assessment.

Ask about rehab options.

Ask about community support as you mentioned that your Dad normally lives alone. The OT can provide referrals to whatever appropriate community services are required. ie. local social services. I.e. personal care, meals, cleaning, shopping and transport maybe needed upon return to his own home as you are working full time and probably will not have the capacity to attend to all his needs.

If your Dad is sociable, ask about local community health centre activities.

Lastly, careful discharge planning (not rushed) is very important for a successful transition.

Good luck with the meeting. Claire

And I nearly forgot...

Ask if your Dad has had a neuropsychologist assessment. If not, ask why not? This will determine his cognition status I.e memory, planning, problem solvingsequencing, attention/concentration and behaviour. It really depends on what part of his brain is damaged. Claire
