Are us up north more friendlier than Southerners

When I go to visit my sister in London I don't think people are as friendly or as helpful as they are back home is this just me?

COULD BE.

Rather depends on where, the busier/touristy areas tend not to be over friendly, but the quieter old villages that have been engulfed by greater London tend to have retained a friendlier outlook.

Erm, well taking people from the London metropolis to be representative of all 'Southerners' is questionable IMO. Big City folk may be less relaxed from whatever part of whatever country in my experience.

As a Londoner born and bred [apart from my time growing up in the Empire] I find most native Londoners are communicative and friendly.

However, a majority of immigrants into the London areas since the mid 80's and their offspring leave a lot to be desired as they pursue the lifestyles practiced at their point of origin. I expect you find the same in Northern cities?

Me? I'll speak to anyone, including Northerners and I even had one as an aunt who was married to one of my Mum's brothers.

Now I'm looking to keep a northerner as a pet, as I understand they can be a loyal friend, but I'm not sure of injections and care package as yet :)

Lol! Northerner are house trained too you know! Not sure how far north a northerner is?

I'm a friendly type and I talk to anyone, on my visits to London it was difficult to know who was a native and who was visiting!

in reply toDanslatete

That's a relief Dansalete. How to know the London natives? It all down to whether Swahili, Hindi, Mandarin or Slav is spoken with a Cockney twang, my old china.

It's true hayabusa - there are plenty of rude persons about but that is common anywhere there's a mass of persons - I experienced that in both Lancaster and Glasgow [and I was refused service in a restaurant on the Isle of Skye ---- probably because my wife is Indian] so rudeness is common in other places too.

we stopped keeping southerners as pets a long time ago most were uncontrollable mongrels no manners did not know how to use a knife and fork but were happy enough eating a big mac or Kentucky with their fingers but did not like to wash their hands before or after a meal, as for the injections It cost too much because they needed that many.

I would like to split the vote because midlanders are probably the most friendly. I am a Brummie by birth, although I've been told I have a Warwickshire accent.

I spent a fair bit of time in London because my ortho surgeon was near to the US embassy on the southern side of Oxford St.

There seems to be quite a secular life and attitude that is unique to London.

The manner in which people push past you and reach around of over you like you dont exist is very rude.

When I go to Birmingham, the New Bullring shopping centre and Selfridges, Centenary Sq or the markets area, everyone talks to you. People hold doors open for you.

All the Rasta's on the market say hi.

It's inclusive rather than the opposite in London City.

As far as the north goes, I confess I'm a closet northerner. I love the straight talking toughness and humour. In the 80's I was working on designing new building projects for North West Gas which meant travelling around the whole of Lancashire. Got a lot of good memories of the many people met.

I still go to London but only to The Ace Cafe now and then, but it's still frosty down there.

I went to Jaywick last month. Culture shock!

Then we were shown Seawick and beyond that the land that time forgot and isn't on the maps..... Bellair!

Only a 1 hour drive from London.

Truly shocking.

I'm lucky to have lived in North Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Wales(north and south), Scotland- Angus and Highlands , East Midlands, Derbyshire but only visited London, Kent, and where ever the Mary Rose is.

I've seen the friendly souls and the stand offish locals who don't take kindly to outsiders.

Wherever I'm living I'm always happy to be home!

in reply toDanslatete

The Mary Rose? Don't you mean that preserved plank of wood? It's in Portsmouth Dockyard.

Took a group of school children there just after it had been raised, one bit of wood being sprayed with water. One of the pupils remarked 'I've seen more interesting bits of wood in Sir's [me] lessons!'

I think it's true to say we all have an affinity for where we grew up, I'd like to move closer to my daughter and family, she lives in East Sussex, always found it fine when I visit, people are friendly enough when you approach them, but it's definitely warmer and cleaner. The quality of light is better, it would suit me better now with my problems and as I get older, where I live is less of an issue.

Some people would hate to move I know, but not me I'm happy anywhere now:-)

just depends where you go but in my experience most are ok.

Nah - just employ more bricklayers to put some more courses on the wall.

In Wales we will be digging that ditch a little bit deeper !!

Here in the capital we are intentionally rude to keep all would be invaders away... clearly we are not yet rude enough because despite the whining about our rudeness, people still keep coming LOL

in reply toiforget

We keep all the good stuff hidden...if you all knew where it was and we werte all nicer and welcoming you'd all come down and never go back oop north LOL

When we want to misbehave we go out to the scenic places and do it there in hope that people will be put off heading our way LOL

in reply toiforget

Sounds like a plan lol

MY FAMILY ARE LONDONERS & I'M A SOUTHERNER BY BIRTH (BUCKS) BUT WHEN PEOPLE ASK I SAY I DON'T COME FROM ANYWHERE! I MOVED 19 TIMES BETWEEN THE AGES OF 9 MONTHS & 27 YRS & HAVE LIVED EVERYWHERE FROM BELFAST TO BUCKS VIA WARWICK, KENT, CHESHIRE, BRISTOL, SUSSEX & MANY MORE SO I'M PRETTY ROOTLESS. MY FAVOURITE PLACE IS KENT, THE FRIENDLIEST WAS DEFINITELY NORTHERN IRELAND. IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN THERE GO! I'VE NEVER LIVED IN N.E. ENGLAND BUT SPENT LOADS OF TIME THERE & WOULD HAVE LOVED TO.

OK, SO IF YOU MAKE EYE CONTACT WITH SOMEONE ON THE TUBE THEY'LL PROBABLY THINK YOU'RE AN AXE MURDERER BUT IF YOU WANT LESSONS IN REAL RUDENESS & UNFRIENDLINESS TRY NEW YORK OR HONG KONG.LOVE THE PLACES BUT YOU HAVE TO HOLD YOUR OWN!!
