High ferritin

Hi everyone, I am on the thyroid community which I recently joined. They told me that I should get a blood test done so I can put on the site for people to help me with my fatigue and tiredNess mood swings and etc.

On my results it came back that my ferritin was 718. The normal range is between 30 and 400.so I made an appointment but I could only get a nurse practioner. She looked at my records and noticed thatI had a ferritin test in august 2015. None of the doctors dI'd a further investigation into why it is high until now.I have phoned the doctors for my results and was told the doctor wants to see me about the results on Tuesday. Non emergency appointment. Back in the 2015 my reading was 820. Do you think this is bad practice and is there any long term damage to myself because of it.I would be grateful if I could get some feedback please.thanks for reading wayne staton

Hi Wayne- ferritin of 800 or so is not in the danger zone assuming you are not showingsigns of ill health- liver damage wouldbe a marker.

However , it would be advisable to get tested for Haemachromatosis genes and an ultrasound to check liver and other organs.

Also get complete blood panel (CBP) Which will give markers for inflammation - ESR andCPR.

It may be a good idea to give up alcohol until this is sorted- to protect the liver.

Your thyroid condition may have a bearing on all this- I don't know enough about that .

Ferritin under a 1000 is not considered too much a danger.

It can be reduced by giving blood. In your case that might take a year to achieve. Assuming nothing else is going on.

All the best.

Pheonix,

I am also on the thyroid forum and have Hashimotos.

In my view the first thing to accomplish is whether thyroid antibodies are elevated as this could have a bearing on a raised ferritin result.

If not, then ask your GP for a genetic haemochromotosis blood test or a referral to get one accomplished. I had to go via haemotology but others have varying routes.

Pheonix,

TGAb are elevated & nearly over range and TPOAb are over range donoting Hashimotos. Raised ferritin levels "could ? " be in the body due to Hashimotos Autoimmune Disease.

Time to get back over to the Thyroid Forum & post any results complete with ranges (numbers in brackets) for members to comment..
