Thickened endometrium

Was admitted to hospital with abdominal pain, vaginal scan showed thickened endometrium and scan needs repeated. Google just brings up cancer related answers. Scared what it could be. Have 3 kids wonder if I have endometriosis although I have regular periods they are sometimes heavy and I often have spotting mid cycle. Any advice appreciated

Google is good for for things like looking around for a type of shoe you are interested in etc etc. It is definitely not good for self diagnosis of medical conditions especially if you are scared. Hopefully your medical team will come up with some answers soon. Take care x

Hi there,

Thank you for your message. We're really sorry to hear that you're feeling scared at the moment.

Looking at Google for answers is perfectly normal but it can often add more to our stress levels as it's often the 'worst' outcomes that we find and focus on. Having a thickened endometrium could for example be caused by something called endometrial hyperplasia. In most cases of hyperplasia this isn't at all linked to cancer, often goes away/reverts to 'normal' on its own, or requires simple progesterone treatment. In few cases this hyperplasia can be classed as 'atypical' which means that there is an increased risk of a cancer eventually developing in the long term.

If you have any other questions or want to go through the next lot of scan results, please do get in touch with us on nurse@eveappeal.org.uk

Best Wishes,

The Ask Eve Team
