Aches and pains all over.

I saw the dietician last week and asked a question about a possible connection between coeliac disease and aches and pains in every joint of my body, head to toe. She was unable (unwilling?) to offer any ideas so it's over to you! I do have osteo-arthritis but this feels a bit different and I am a 'woman of a certain age' so it could easily be menopausal/hormonal but I was just curious. I would love to feel a bit less ancient and bit more me again!

it's possibly the menopause, apparently the changes in our hormones affect our ligaments. If you ask me it seems everything that goes wrong with me at the moment is connected to the menopause...who'd be a woman eh? I've been getting lots of achy joints and I know I've not been gluttoned and all my bloods etc are are 'wonderful'. Allegedly once the menopause passes I will feel much more my old self......it'll will all be down to old age then! I think I'm getting cynical...do apologise lol

Before I went gf my main symptoms were aches and pains all over. celiacdisease.about.com/od/...

Now gluten free and post menopausal I have little joint pain. I find that regular exercise - Pilates - has helped with flexibility and strength, and made a lot of difference.

I have been told that Glucosamine may help to strengthen joints, but I'm unsure if that is medically correct.

I feel exactly the same JoolsEnzo. My whole body aches, even fingers and toes feels so stiff.

I have had a load of blood test recently but apart from one showing some inflamation they were pretty inconclusive. i have now just had a Thyroid test and am waiting for the result. i have also got a bone scan booked. i have been through the menopause and recently stopped HRT which is probably when I started to ache to such an extreme. im usually a fit

60 year old but feel like a 90 year old woman. i was first diagnosed with CD when I was 34 years old, so I have been gluten free for 26 years. I think you must keep on pushing for an answer, I wont give up till I get my life back.

Thank you for your words of wisdom. I will certainly ask the GP about a thyroid check and I am still awaiting my bone scan. I walk my two labradors for a few miles each day but know I should try to find a low-impact exercise class to try and build up my muscle tone. My husband has just bought a rowing machine and I have promised I will give it a try. I am on warfarin so pain relief is limited to paracetamol and most supplements are not suitable but I am going to trial a calcium/magnesium supplement starting today as I read that this could help. I will report back in about 6 weeks!

Hi JoolsEnzo, have you had blood test for low blood count, that may have something to do with the pain, Evening Primrose oil, if you can take it with the other drugs you are on, may help to keep the pain at bay and the menopause, symptoms, and as you have said walk as much as you can. good luck. try Yoga, that is very good.

I cut out dairy 6 months ago as I figured out (through keeping a food diary) that it was giving me a constant swollen throat, tiredness and aches and pains all over. I'm 38 but felt like an 80 year old a lot of the time! This was after being gluten free for over a year following coeliac diagnosis. My blood results also kept showing a slight inflammation for a number of years which wasn't solved by going GF. I'm now back to normal finally. It may be worth considering whether another type of food is affecting you (not necessarily dairy). Just an idea...

Before I went GF & DF - I had terrible aching joints, along with dreadful (& I mean dreadful) mood swings related to the peri menopause, my energy levels would plummet & I felt as if I was walking with a tonne of concrete on my shoulders, my thyroid levels would also fluctuate (but it was always within the 'normal' range according to the UK levels) - but since being GF & DF the above disappeared - unless I get accidentally gluttoned & then it comes back - so in my book, it's all definitely related. I actually think the menopause just exacerbates everything, when you are also struggling with coeliacs.
