I stupidly ate Fish and Chips

I have been GF for 10 years or so and haven't actually really eaten gluten in all that time. My husband does eat gluten although not too much, and on Thursday he bought fish and chips for lunch. I stupidly tried a little bit of the batter (omg it was so good) then a little bit more, ate some fish and ate quite a few chips. That was lunch time and I seemed to remember that when I ate gluten in the past I felt ill within around 4 or 5 hours. When I went to bed I remember thinking that maybe I no longer had a problem with it!!!! Next morning I was in so much pain, stomach and back - in fact I thought I was having a heart attack at first - and rushing to the loo plus feeling so sick. I'd forgotten how severe my reaction can be - and this went on in 'waves' all day. It is now Sunday and I still feel sick although no longer any pain. I cannot eat much, I've had cereal and a few pieces of toast but having just cooked my husband bacon and eggs I feel like I want to throw up. Any ideas what I can do to get rid of the sick feeling or anything else I can do (apart from getting my husband to cook his own flaming breakfast).

Oh Loobs, you have my sympathy. As I understand it, the longer you have been GF, the worse your reaction to eating gluten can be. I wouldn't blame you if you are put off fish & chips for ever now. It is possible to find decent GF fish & chips in many places. I went out for lunch with my son on Friday and had GF F&C. Son had regular muggle ones, and we both enjoyed it. A bit mean to bring fish & chips home though? I hope you are feeling better by now.

I am almost back to normal and yes, I have had and enjoyed GF fish and chips - I was just somewhere that it wasn't on offer . Serves me right, I will not make that mistake again. On the plus side, I lost a bit of weight and it has kick-started my 'diet' so every cloud.....

I get it, just too tempting. I'm pleased that you have recovered.

I understand the temptation. We tell ourselves that we’ll be fine. A little bit can’t hurt. If it’s been a long time since you were last glutened it can be terrible when the pain, headache and nausea strike us down for days. You have my sympathy. Go kick a loaf of bread! 😂

Bad luck. Perhaps try some ginger tea to settle your stomach?
