Probably in flavourings - none of the other ingredients are gluten-ous by nature

odd, isn't it. I think it must be that it is made in a factory that also makes chocolates with wheat in (many do - my mother in law always buys me thankyou chocolates which contain wheat!), and also manufacturers use flour to help chocolates release from the moulds. Cadbury doesn't include the wispa in their gluten free listings, so you should avoid even though it seems ridiculous.

Hi paulb44, There could be a variety of reasons why they cannot guarantee that it is gluten free. It may be one of the bars that no longer is manufactured in Britain; it could be on a multi-use enrober; it may be being produced in an area where ingredients are being used that may contain gluten are being manufactured.

If you really enjoy the bar, then why not write to Cadbury and ask them for confirmation - it might just be an over-sight on their labelling as it always used to be gluten free.

Write to them at this address:

Cadbury

Sales & Marketing Department, Cadbury World, Linden Rd, Bournville, Birmingham B30 2LU

or email them at this address:

All Cadbury has got a 'may contain' label now. My philosophy is that if they can't be bothered to do the chemistry then I can't be bothered to buy it.

I have converted to Aldi chocolate bars - most of theirs are gluten free - it is stated clearly on the back of those that are - and they are lovely chocolate .. I am very fussy with chocolate so I was most surprised just how nice they are :)

I was thinking of more mainstream producers.

Hi Paul, I asked a similar question to CUK regarding good old Dairy Milk bar. They are not listed in their guide but Dairy Milk buttons are? Surely it's the same chocolate and probably the same used for Wispa too. CUK said that it is likely to be due to cross contamination due to products containing wafer or such like. Even stranger though is that Wispa Gold is perfectly fine and is listed as GF. It just goes to show that we all check labels thinking his is the best way to be sure we will be safe but there is we could still be caugh out. I stick to Crunchie, Flakes, Twirls and Buttons for my chocolate fix.

I know a lot of things which were deemed gluten free are no longer classed as gluten free as they are made in the same factory as gluten containing items and cross contamination could be an issue--eg bisto best was GF but, when the ppm level was lowered the factory could not sustain the levels required for the lower measurement--the gravy probably still is as gluten free as it was BUT now does not conform to the new standard, so although the goods you want may be GF they could be contaminated in the factory and the manufacturers are covering their tushies by stating that they could contain gluten

the itsa bitsa wispa pieces in the share bag are gf too! strange but like has been said before probably has more to do with the factory they are produced in.

I've been gluten intolerant for the last few months and for ages haven't touched any chocolate. I recently stopped at a Hotel Chocolate stall in London Bridge station and asked there. The lady said that all of their chocolate (apart from those with biscuit based fillings) are gf. I don't eat chocolate often, so think it will be worth going there for a treat!!

Careful as you need to check the supplier of chocolate is gluten free. Many chocolateers get their chocolate from factories which sometimes have cross-contamination issues. So even though the shop you buy them from makes them gluten free the raw materials could be tainted. So ask them to check with their suppliers.

I complained to Cadbury and they told me that it was to do with the glucose they used as some was derived from wheat, which is why Cadbury Dairy Milk said contains wheat. Depending on the location of the factory where the chocolate is made depends on the types of ingredient hence the difference in some products. eg Mars full size are GF but fun size mars are NOT GF (Made in different countries.) Coeliac UK is the best source for checking or the manufacturer.
