I wonder if anyone can tell me.......

Hello

I am sorry if I have posted this in the wrong forum but I really need some advice here

I had fbc and liver, kidney etc blood tests done Wed just gone (i.e. tomorrow a week) including a celiac blood test, i know from experience fbc can take up to 48hrs but they say celiac can take 2 weeks...

My question is would the lab run the normal tests now (FBC etc) and if all normal just send with the celiac result to the surgery or would they store the bloods to run later for the fbc and only test when the celiac result is back??

I havent had any results back as yet..... Im very nervous for the result....

Anyone please if you have been through this or advice?

Thanks

It would seem logical to run the tests immediately, especially the FBC as coeliac disease often causes anemia. If the tests throw up something serious, the surgery would contact you once they have the results.

They normally run all the tests they can in-house, and that will include fbc and most if not all the liver tests. And nowadays results normally go through to the GP electronically as soon as they are done. If its taking two weeks for the coeliac tests then they are probably sending them out to another lab.

Most GP surgeries only call if the doctor sees a problem when the results come in. But if you don't have online access to see your results I would call in, maybe 3 weeks and ask for a copy of the results.

What symptoms have you been suffering?

Hi

Thats the thing i called last week and this week and they said they will all be sent together and it can take 3 weeks so i can wait for the celiac but im concerned whether the lab will freeze the blood to do the fbc when the celiac is done etc as they said the celiac goes to another hospital.

No, I think it very unlikely that they would go to the trouble and expense of freezing the blood. The in house tests will already be done, but maybe the lab does a total report when they have all the results. It would be very unusual to do it like that. I would be inclined to suspect that the receptionist is telling a little white lie - and the doctors just don't review the results till they are all in.

I used to run the computer system for a large multi site GP surgery. I left 9 years ago, but already then the results just came through automatically from the lab via the internet. It just doesn't make sense not to send through what they have - the lab doesn't know why the doctor has ordered those tests and how urgent they are. But also delaying just risks mix-ups, follow up phone calls and all sorts of other inconveniences!

If they haven't called you there will be nothing life-threatening in the results.

Thanks for your useful message i really appreciate it!

I also have direct access to my records and everyday there is nothing there.

I think they would have run the normal tests at least well i hope

Were your bloods taken at a gp surgery or from a consultant appointment at hospital? Usually my bloods from the gp surgery are available very quickly as i have access to my records online. I had bloods taken for coeliac amongst others on the 8th of August and the consultants secretary says I can't have the results until I see the consultant again. So if yours were taken at hospital you may have the same wait.

Hi there

No they were taken at the gp surgery. I also have access to my online records and check and call everyday.

Hi. They will do fbc and quicker tests straight away and should send the results as they each come back in turn. My practice will give results over the phone so it might be worth phoning to see if yours will.

The nurse just told me that they would have run the routine tests already ie fbc etc they wouldnt leave it until the celiac is back. They then batch the results and send it all through together. She said if something wasnt in normal range they would have sent it to the surgery.
