Does caffeine affect calcium absorption?

2 Replies

A friend has just been diagnosed with osteoporosis and they told me that they had been advised to avoid caffeine as it affects the calcium in our bodies.

And I'd be interested to know more.

don't know about that but do know that fizzy drinks make a difference - I only have sparkling water as an occasional treat as it affects calcium absorption

Thanks Lois, having read a bit more about this, caffeine does indeed make us excrete calcium but the amount can be offset by having a table spoon of milk with the tea/coffee. So you are right to avoid fizzy drinks.

This is interesting as it shows other foods that stop our bodies from absorbing calcium;

I think it would be interesting to ask Dr Rodney about foods that have a negative effect on calcium absorption. I'll leave that decision to the GFG admin team.
