Was diagnosed as having celiac disease. Have been trying to determine what gluten free foods were causing a problem after I basically cut out all wheat, barley and rye. Started by googling "celiac disease and tomatoes", since I love salads and have been eating a lot of cherry tomatoes. Came up with your site, saw all the comments concerning tomatoes as a possible culprit and will discontinue them for now. Thank you!

Celiac disease and tomatoes
Never herd of tomatoes causing problems unless they have been contaminated ie used on the same chopping boards as people who eat gluten. If your new to coeliac/celiac avoid cross contamination even separate toaster will help.
Tomatoes belong to the Nightshade family- those little clusters of flowers on the plants give them away- I have coeliac disease which is gluten related and found in cereal based wheat, rye, barley and oat products, check all ingredients and packaging carefully. However I have found that I do have a separate reaction to Nightshades particularly white potatoes, chillis and tomatoes which causes uncomfortable bloating and very bad acid reflux. I don’t believe the two things are related but could be wrong.
I realised when I went traditional gluten free that I was reacting to corn, oats and rice. Potatoes can cross react with corn and when I did some testing, I showed as having a reaction to potato and tomato (as well as dairy, soy, caffeine). Nightshades do seem to be a common trigger.
I agree that nightshades do cause issues with some people, but it is not Celiac related. And as said, cross contamination must be avoided.
There is a definite learning curve. But, you will get the hang of it.😊
Viome do a 1 tsp stool test which shows how your Microbiome reacts with certain foods. Tomatoes have a mosaic virus which can be passed on to susceptible people. This virus can cause inflammation.
As you remove inflammatory foods and focus on beneficial foods it is possible to alter the internal flora and subsequent inflammation.
as above nightshades are problematic for some - for different reasons though. tomatoes contain histamine for one thing and alkaloids for another so you may have to do detective work to find out what it is in your case.
