“Non-celiac wheat sensitivity: rationality and irrationality of a gluten-free diet in individuals affected with non-celiac disease: a review”

.

The above is a review article about the complications and clinical aspects of a diagnosis relating to Coeliac Disease and non-Coeliac Wheat Sensitivity (NCWS).

The research community is still working on figuring out a clear way to diagnose NCWS.

As the above article shows there are ways to define based on gut biopsy findings. Diagnosing Coeliac Disease in itself is by intestinal biopsy as the standard sets out. But this can be complicated and takes skill of the physician as there are overlapping findings between different gastrointestinal conditions. For instance the increase in intraepithial lymphocytosis is seen in not just Coeliac but quite a few other disorders too.

Anyway this may be of interest to all the ‘gluten intolerant’ out there, especially if you like the science. 🙂

I started reading the paper but was put off by the patronising tone adopted by the authors. It felt reminiscent of how women were diagnosed as being hysterical by early clinicians who didn’t want to listen to their very real health problems. It’s sad that NCGS is treated with such disdain by some researchers.

Fair does. Thanks for replying.

Non-coeliac wheat/gluten sensitivity is very real and it’s great that researchers are working on it. There’s quite a bit of new research accumulating.

Where are the researchers treating it with ‘disdain’ you mention? Can you link their reference? Not come across.

There is a section with some histological information on how gastrointestinal conditions are diagnosed. Similar to guidelines and consensus on Coeliacs dx; a clear set of guidelines for the dx of non-Coeliac wheat/gluten sensitivity would benefit patients.
