IBS Problems ?

Does anyone have Coeliac and IBS? I'm getting so many problems the last two weeks. Last week I was very constipated. Today I have terrible diarrhea. Everything I eat just runs through me. I think it's possible to have both problems.

Hi benmaise.

Definitely IBS and Coeliac go together.

Hope you find some answers soon. Did you get to talk to a dietician yet?

Just brainstorming so may or may not apply to you. Do you drink/eat cows milk?

Do you eat gluten free oats? Brown rice? Corn?

Coeliacs can also be sensitive to dairy and other grains. Though rare I’ve seen quoted in the scientific research that 10% of coeliacs react to oat avenin similar to gluten (doesn’t matter if certified gluten free). I think it’s still the case in Australia that coeliacs are advised to not eat oats.

50% of coeliacs can react to cows milk protein similar to gluten.

Upto a third of coeliacs can react to corn/maize protein similar to gluten.

Brown rice (not white) is gluten free but contains digestive enzyme (trypsin) inhibitors, and fiber that can irritate the gut in particularly sensitive people.

If none of that applies or makes sense because I think you said you cook everything from scratch, there are a number of other things that your doctor should investigate with you.

Hope that’s useful or interesting info to know.

Thanks Researchfan. I stopped eating corn because I was told it was high in fibre. I don't eat oats now and I use soya milk. I have awful diarrhoea. I haven't seen a dietician yet. I do think now its something much worse . I can't eat a lot now . Your information is appreciated.

I have both Celiac and IBS, along with Hashimotos. My IBS only manifests as diarrhea. Do not use any soy products or any grains. Stick to meat, vegetables, fruit, no dairy unless it is raw dairy and whatever nuts might agree with you. No junk food of any kind.

Hopefully your doctor helping you?

The first line of treatment for ibs - when everything else has been ruled out to be causing symptoms diarrhoea and or constipation - that the dietician will likely advise on is a low fructan or low fodmaps diet. Do you know about it/tried it before?

It’s an elimination and reintroduction diet that’s been shown to help in a lot. I found these two foods lists online, very helpful. I have the monash university app which is helpful too. But these two lists - which foods to avoid, and which to include freely are comprehensive.

Soya milk is possibly a trigger too as it’s on the avoid list.

Besides being high fodmap, Whole Soya beans have a lot of digestive enzyme inhibitors too, unless traditionally processed and or fermented.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you are having such problems.

I recommend keeping a food diary. It might help you to investigate what foods are the trigger foods for you.

Have you considered going to see a doctor to rule out conditions such as diverticulitis? That can be an issue which causes considerable gut issues similar to those you describe.

Additional intolerances can also make things worse. I had a friend that couldn’t eat onions, for example.

Best wishes figuring it out.

Thanks all. I am waiting for the results of my stool sample. It's to see if there is any blood in the stool. He just felt my stomach over my vest and said everything seemed ok. He also said it could be my mental health. He knows I can get quite anxious about my health. I know something is going on as I am very tired also.

I have microscopic colitis along with celiac. It was diagnosed by a colonoscopy and taking biopsies of the colon. It is treatable with budesonide and immodium. My stool tests were normal and my colonoscopy visually looked normal. It only showed up in the biopsies. I would return to the doctor for more tests to figure out what else might be going on for you.
