Coeliac and anxiety

Hi everyone

Quick question. There is a link between coeliac and anxiety? Can I read an article somewhere? I've been coeliac for a while and anxious forever, but I noticed lately that I am too anxious and as a consequence, my BP is a bit high as well. I have a few things going on in my life like everyone else, but I always managed to keep them under control. I've done blood tests and everything seems fine except the VitD is a bit low. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I keep fixating on things (I probably have an inflexible nervous system) and am not able to let go.

Hi Mikeila,

I'm sorry I can't answer your question I'm afraid. I suffered with some anxiety around the time I was dx coeliac (Nov 2020), but I can't pinpoint why. At the time I was either deficient or borderline in everything and also slightly over-medicated for under-active thyroid, which I'd never been before. 🤦‍♀️

I do think being deficient in Vit D had a huge impact on my brain function though, in that I was beginning to think I had dementia (as did my GP).

I hope that you get to the root of the problem soon.

Hi Mikeila,

Sorry to hear. Well if you Google the gut brain axis it will name all the systems - so the nervous system. If you are in the UK there’s two neurology centres (Sheffield and London dedicated to gluten mediated illnesses).

When doctors say your blood work is normal, I don’t agree. Ask for a print out or if you have electronic access. Some people can do perfectly well having iron stores of 20 mg/L whilst others will be breathless, others hair may fall out. We aren’t all the same.

You can have anxiety from vitamin B12 deficiency, lack of magnesium, lack of vitamin B1 and few other deficiencies.

Also most interestingly coeliacs can struggle to make a neurotransmitter (chemical that acts on nerve cells) called GABA. This has a calming effect on brain. Lots of epileptics respond well to a gluten free diet.

Sorry, too fatigued to put links but wanted to answer 😃

Thank you so much for replying! I really appreciate it :) I've asked for a printed copy of my blood results from my consultant. I've done my blood tests recently but not sure what to look for as all of them seem in the right range, maybe some of them at the bottom level. In terms of the two neurology centers, can I see somebody or book an appointment? Also, you've mentioned the neurotransmitter called GABA, how do I know if I need to take supplements? Or I'm just going to give it a go? I think I've seen it in Holland and Barett.

I only know somethings . We are all so, so, different. Start with Vitamin D, but you have to know vitaminD3 with K2 (they activate each other). Amazon Howard and James, sell the one most people take.

Have a look on vitamin B12 deficiency/pernicious anaemia and thyroid forum. Feel free to post your results here making sure GP surgery and your name etc doesn’t show. Lots of people know their stuff.

Ok GABA knowledge started from reading Datis Kharrizhan’s book Why Isn’t My Brain Working (he’s a chiropractor, researcher, functional practitioner, lots of other qualifications.) It’s worth a read - dip in, dip out of. You can ask the local library to buy and you borrow instead of buying it.

GABA costs £17 in H & B (I’m not a fan of the chain store) but it is a rather large molecule that should not cross an in tact blood brain barrier.

Sounds complex doesn’t it. You’ll waste your money. His book goes through case studies so, it’s about building your personal health picture. It takes time and patience for our bodies to heal.

Good morning Narwhal

I will post my blood tests results later on tonight and maybe you can give me an advise. Also, thank you for the book recommendation. Where do I get that D3 with K2 again? Amazon?

Thank you again...

Hi Mikeila,

Yes, Amazon for Howard & James vitamin D3 with K2. (As advised from pernicious anaemia part of here). Many people with this condition (vitamin B12 deficiency) have low stomach acid so need other vitamins and minerals.

So these are my results: Haemoglobin 141, 115-160 g/L; Ferritin 115, 10-300ug/L; Folate 8.7, 3.1-20 ug/L ; Vitamin B12 379, 187-883 ng/L; Iron 16.5, 10-31 umol/L; Iron Saturation 20.9, 18-55%; Transferrin 3.15, 1.8-3.82 g/L; OH Vit D 43.1, 50-220 nmol/L; OH Vitamin D2 <5.0 ; OH Vitamin D3 43.1 nmol/L; TSH 0.63, 0.35-4.94 mU/L; Immunoglobulin A 4.1, 0.8-4 g/L; Immunoglobulin G 12.9, 5.3-16.5 g/L; Immunoglobulin M 1.09, 0.5-2.5 g/L;

That's it! When I called to ask how are my results they said everything looks normal! For me, it looks like I'm almost at the bottom with everything! Apart from Vit D, do I need to take any supplements? Is it possible that this anxiety state is because of my menopause as well? But I've been peri menopausal for 5/6 years now.

Hi Mikeila.

I’m not a doctor just an avid reader of research but I’d say your numbers look pretty good generally. Just for interest my latest vitamin d was 42, ferritin was 22 and folate was 4. I suffer ocd anxiety and relate it to histamine intolerance, and possibly blood sugar regulation especially high glycaemic foods like potatoes which spike up and down. I’ve recently started testing my blood sugar and notice a definite pattern. I try to stay low carb because of this.

Looking at your TSH on the lower end and wonder if it’s related for you as hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) can cause anxiety state and feeling on edge too. But I’m no expert in this area. You might want to follow up with your doctor.

X

Both. Menopause symptoms can be awful especially when mixed with Coeliac Disease diagnosis. I do hope the supplements help. There are some wonderful helpful people on here 😊
