Fixing gut health

Hmmm just came across this Doc on youtube talking about SIBO and other gut health issues. May be worth 25 mins of your time to listen. Pretty controversial. Makes you think šŸ¤”.

I mean I agree with the whole fat and gut moving/spasm (MMC) thing but you also need vegetables for the bacteria in the large intestine to ferment to produce short chain fatty acids for the health of the colon. There is a healthy balance needed and whilst we have evolved, even cavemen (and women!) ate forms of fruit & veg. Years of antibiotics, medication, contraception, stress and poor diet will have impacted on microbiome balanceā€¦.

Hi.

Thanks for your reply. I agree. Although too much fermentable veg not good either (FODMAPS). I also listened to Dr Paul Mason on YouTube regards the need for fiber and the problem with lectins in food. Itā€™s good to have different perspectives that make senseā€¦

Hi Narwhal10 šŸ¤— .

Thanks. Just came across this Doc and watching some of his other videos he makes a lot of sense, interesting scientific explanations.

Hope youā€™re well too.

Hmm. As per Gutguru's comment - we do need veg and the bacteria in the large intestine - we have not evolved as carnivores, but as omnivores (like pigs!) We are evolved to eat a mix of animal and plant foods. I do not agree with his opening comments about not eating leafy and other veg. Our colon gives us much more than water and salt - if it is healthy, it gives us all sorts of goodies produced by our gut flora from the parts of our food that we can't process in the small intestine.Having said that, I most definitely do agree with eating a low carb high fat diet, and not being afraid of animal fats. Those of us on here are eating gluten free (in my case because I am coeliac) and this is the clue - I do not believe we evolved to eat huge quantities of grains and sugars, and this is what is wrong with the standard western diet - not real fruit and veg!

I now eat meat and cheese, enormous quantities of eggs and fresh veg, and also vegetable proteins from beans and lentils, but no grains - and I have never felt healthier.

Thatā€™s great. Thanks for your reply Whydothis.

I agree real food is where itā€™s at. I was eating low carb but having ongoing issues hence my personal path starting with the gluten challenge (and inevitable higher carb intake), over 12 months ago. Long story short itā€™s allergies and histamine intolerance I figured after years.

Iā€™m fascinated by these different diet camps out there at the moment - carnivore and starch whole food plant based for example. This Doc is the first low carb keto and carnivore advocate Iā€™ve come across that explains the scientific reasoning so well. He advocates eating vegetables on a keto diet.

I think it was a lecture by Dr Paul Mason (an Australian Doctor in the low carb community on YouTube), that explained the case for why thereā€™s no need for fiber and that short chain fatty acids and ketones keep a healthy colon on a keto or carnivore diet.

I find the different perspectives fascinating. The thing in common is elimination of processed foods (seed oils, emulsifiers, additives etc.) and sugar.
